The growing tension between Bobby Flay and Brooke Williamson on Season 7 of BBQ Brawl is no longer just fan speculation — Bobby himself is now openly talking about it.

In a new interaction with fans on Instagram, Flay admitted that he feels like the “odd guy out” while competing against both his girlfriend Brooke Williamson and reigning champion Maneet Chauhan this season.

The conversation started after Flay invited viewers to send him questions about the show. One fan specifically asked how he felt about Maneet seemingly trying to use the Bobby/Brooke relationship dynamic against them strategically during the competition.

Instead of denying it, Bobby immediately acknowledged the strategy.

“Smart strategy,” Flay responded. “@chefbrookew is focused on winning this thing and @maneetchauhan is the reigning champ. I’m the odd guy out!”

That answer instantly fueled even more fan discussion surrounding the increasingly intense atmosphere developing between the three captains this season.

Season 7 already arrived with major built-in drama because Brooke Williamson officially transitioned from judge to full team captain for the first time. Previously, Brooke had primarily served as a judge on the series, but this season places her directly into competition against Bobby and Maneet — dramatically changing the dynamic of the show.

And according to viewers, the rivalry is already escalating quickly.

Fans began noticing tension almost immediately after the premiere aired on May 11. During Episode 1, Brooke’s now-viral “No.” response to Bobby after he jokingly told her she was “supposed to root” for him became one of the season’s first meme-worthy moments.

At the time, many viewers interpreted the interaction as playful flirtation between the celebrity chef couple.

But after Episode 2 aired, audiences started viewing the rivalry differently.

Instead of simple teasing, viewers now believe the competitiveness between Bobby and Brooke looks much more genuine. Brooke has increasingly challenged Bobby’s strategies openly during prep and mentoring segments, while Bobby continues subtly provoking her team whenever possible.

As one fan perfectly summarized online:

“They’re arguing like two chefs, not a couple anymore.”

That growing “cold war” between the pair appears to be exactly what production hoped for when moving Brooke into a captain role.

The dynamic became even more entertaining because Maneet Chauhan immediately recognized the opportunity.

In trailers and promotional interviews, Maneet jokingly suggested that the couple might team up against her. But fans now think the opposite may actually be happening: Maneet appears to be strategically encouraging the rivalry between Bobby and Brooke rather than allowing them to operate as allies.

And Bobby himself seems fully aware of it.

During an appearance on Good Morning America, Flay joked about the difficult position he is in this season.

“My girlfriend is now one of the captains on the show, so we’re competing against each other,” he explained. “So basically, I’m in a no-win situation.”

Despite the increasingly competitive atmosphere onscreen, Bobby insisted the relationship itself remains healthy.

“It’s a very healthy relationship,” he added.

Still, viewers are fascinated by how naturally the personal and professional dynamics are blending together during challenges.

Part of what makes the rivalry work so well is that Brooke clearly is not treating the competition lightly. Bobby himself admitted earlier this year that Brooke has always wanted the opportunity to mentor and compete directly on the show rather than judge from the sidelines.

“She’s always wanted to be one of the mentors and cook on the show,” Bobby explained during an interview at the South Beach Wine & Food Festival earlier this year.

Once the two chefs started dating, however, Bobby said they established one important rule:

they cannot judge each other professionally.

“How can we judge each other?” Flay explained. “We can compete against each other in kind of friendly ways.”

But based on the first two episodes of BBQ Brawl, fans are beginning to think the competition may no longer be entirely “friendly.”

Especially because Bobby openly admitted something viewers are already noticing themselves:

Brooke Williamson is extremely competitive.

“She’s tough to beat,” Flay said.

And so far this season, she seems determined to prove it.
