Episode 9 of America’s Culinary Cup delivered one of the most demanding challenges of the season, ultimately leading to the shocking elimination of Katie Button, a James Beard Award winner widely considered a strong contender for the title.
Hosted by Padma Lakshmi, the competition continues its search for the best chef in the United States, this time introducing a new category: World Cuisine. The twist pushed the remaining five elite chefs to their limits. They were tasked with preparing three dishes in just three hours—each inspired by a different country and culinary tradition: one dumpling dish, one rice dish, and one noodle dish.
The episode began with a fast-paced culinary quiz that determined which countries each chef would work with. Buddha Lo selected Thailand, India, and Nigeria. Cara Stadler chose Ukraine, France, and Korea. Matt Peters went with Japan, Jamaica, and Italy. Katie Button picked Spain, Peru, and Mexico, while Chris Morgan opted for Morocco, Lebanon, and Turkey.
Judging remained as rigorous as ever. Padma Lakshmi was joined by Michael Cimarusti and Wylie Dufresne, who evaluated each dish based on flavor, creativity, presentation, and adherence to the challenge rules. Each category was scored out of five, with a maximum of 60 points from the core panel. To raise the stakes, three additional culinary heavyweights—Roy Choi, Kwame Onwuachi, and Asma Khan—joined the judging table, bringing the total possible score to 120.
The dumpling round immediately set the tone. Cara Stadler dominated with 107 points, showcasing technical precision and creativity. Chris Morgan followed closely with 101, while Matt Peters and Buddha Lo struggled to keep pace. Katie Button, surprisingly, landed at the bottom with 73 points—a setback that would later prove costly.
However, the competition took a dramatic turn in the rice round. Katie made a powerful comeback, earning 103 points—the highest score of the round. Her dish demonstrated bold flavors and strong execution, briefly putting her back into contention. Meanwhile, the other chefs delivered more modest performances, with Cara and Chris unable to match Katie’s momentum.
Everything came down to the noodle round—and this is where the competition was ultimately decided. Chris Morgan delivered a flawless dish, earning a perfect score of 120—the first of the season. His performance cemented his dominance and secured his place at the top. Matt Peters also impressed with 110 points, while Buddha Lo showed consistency with 96. Cara, however, faltered with 74, and Katie suffered the most significant blow of the night, scoring just 60 points.
When the final scores were tallied, Chris Morgan led with 298 points, followed by Matt Peters (263), Cara Stadler (261), and Buddha Lo (241). Katie Button finished last with 236 points, resulting in her elimination.
The outcome was particularly surprising given Katie’s credentials and strong mid-round recovery. Despite her standout rice dish, her earlier struggles and final-round performance ultimately sealed her fate.
Reflecting on her journey, Katie expressed both exhaustion and gratitude. “It’s truly a challenging experience to make it into the top five and not go all the way,” she said. “This pushed me mentally, physically, and emotionally. I’m honored to have come this far and to showcase my abilities.”
With Katie’s departure, the competition moves forward with four highly accomplished chefs, each now closer than ever to claiming the $1 million grand prize—the largest in culinary competition history.
