For the first time in years, Kristen Kish is speaking candidly about some of the most emotional moments of her Top Chef journey — from the intense pressure of replacing Padma Lakshmi to the heartbreaking departure of contestant Jennifer Lee Jackson.
During a recent appearance on Entertainment Weekly’s The Awardist podcast, Kish reflected on how dramatically her relationship with the show has evolved since winning Top Chef Season 10 and eventually stepping into the host role.
Kristen Admits She Was “Panicking Inside” During Her First Season as Host
Although viewers saw a calm and confident host during Top Chef Season 21, Kish revealed that the reality behind the scenes was very different.
Taking over after Padma Lakshmi’s departure was one of the biggest challenges of her career. Kish said she placed enormous pressure on herself to succeed, constantly worrying about disappointing viewers, contestants, and the production team.
According to Kish, she was “almost panicking inside” throughout her first season as host.
The admission is especially notable because fans spent months debating whether anyone could successfully replace Lakshmi after her long tenure on the series.
Now, heading into her third season with the franchise, Kish says she has finally found her own voice and feels completely comfortable in the role.
“I’ve settled into myself,” she explained, adding that she now approaches hosting in a way that feels natural rather than trying to live up to someone else’s legacy.
The Emotional Story Behind Jennifer Lee Jackson’s Exit
One of the most heartbreaking moments of Top Chef Season 23 involved Jennifer Lee Jackson’s unexpected departure from the competition.
According to Kish, the situation was even more serious than what viewers saw on television.
Jackson entered the season already dealing with a shoulder injury. As filming continued, she also developed Bell’s palsy, a condition that causes temporary facial paralysis and can require medical treatment.
While Jackson initially wanted to continue competing and adapted to cooking with one arm in a brace, her condition became increasingly concerning during Restaurant Wars.
Kish revealed that production ultimately had difficult conversations with Jackson and her partner, fellow contestant Justin Tootla, as the possibility of hospitalization became a real concern.
What affected Kish most was not only Jackson’s health struggles but the emotional weight of what the couple was experiencing.
Justin had just been eliminated from the competition, and now Jackson was facing the possibility of losing her own shot at one of the biggest opportunities of her professional career.

Kish said the combination of those circumstances overwhelmed her emotionally and led to one of the rare moments where viewers saw her break down in tears.
“I felt for him, and I felt for her,” she explained.
Why Kristen Turned Down Top Chef: World All-Stars
Kish also revealed a surprising behind-the-scenes detail that many fans never knew.
After winning Season 10, she was later approached about returning as a contestant for Top Chef: World All-Stars.
Her answer was immediate.
“No.”
Kish explained that she considers her competitive Top Chef chapter finished and has no desire to return to the kitchen as a contestant.
Unless a future season is connected to a charitable cause, she has no plans to compete again.
The revelation may disappoint longtime fans who dreamed of seeing Kish battle other Top Chef champions on the biggest international stage, but she says she has already “graduated” from that part of her career.
No Dancing With the Stars Partnership With Mark Ballas
Kish also addressed another fan-favorite idea that has circulated since her appearance on The Traitors.
Many viewers hoped she might one day join Dancing with the Stars alongside professional dancer Mark Ballas.
However, Kish says that partnership is extremely unlikely.
According to Ballas, the height difference between them would make them a difficult pairing on the dance floor. Kish joked that she is already taller than him barefoot, and adding heels would only make matters worse.
While she doesn’t expect to ever dance with Ballas on the show, she emphasized that the two remain close friends and will happily keep dancing together off-camera.
A Full-Circle Top Chef Journey
More than a decade after reluctantly agreeing to compete on Top Chef, Kish says the experience fundamentally changed her life.
She admitted she initially doubted whether she belonged in the competition at all and struggled with feelings of insecurity.
Looking back, however, she now sees Top Chef as one of the defining experiences that helped build her confidence and taught her to embrace opportunities even when they feel intimidating.
That mindset eventually carried her from contestant, to champion, to one of the most recognizable faces in the franchise’s history — a journey that, by her own admission, almost never happened.
