One of the biggest post-finale debates among Top Chef fans isn’t about who officially won the competition.
It’s about whether Laurence Louie was actually the chef who impressed the judges the most over the course of the entire season.
The theory has exploded across social media, Reddit discussions, and fan communities in the days following the finale.
The argument is fairly simple.
Many viewers believe Laurence was the most consistently strong chef throughout Season 23. Fans point to his multiple challenge victories, frequent appearances near the top of the rankings, and his reputation for rarely delivering a truly poor dish. Even before the finale aired, several commentators viewed him as one of the season’s most reliable performers.
That has led to a popular fan theory:
If Top Chef awarded the title based on an entire season’s body of work rather than a single finale meal, Laurence might have won.
Supporters of the theory argue that the show’s format rewards performance on one specific night. Under that system, the champion is determined by the final meal, not by cumulative points, challenge wins, or season-long consistency.
Of course, that’s also exactly how Top Chef has always worked.
The judges evaluate the food in front of them at that moment, especially during the finale. And in Season 23, those judges ultimately selected Rhoda Magbitang as the winner after her four-course finale meal impressed the panel.
Still, the Laurence discussion refuses to disappear.
On Reddit, numerous viewers expressed that they were personally rooting for Laurence, while others praised his calm demeanor and steady performance throughout the competition. Some fans even described him as their preferred winner despite expecting Rhoda to take the title.
What makes the rumor interesting is that it isn’t really an accusation of unfair judging.
Instead, it’s more of a philosophical debate about what Top Chef should reward.
Should the winner be the chef who performs best across an entire season?
Or should the title go to the chef who delivers the strongest final meal when everything is on the line?
Fans who support Laurence generally favor the first argument. Fans defending Rhoda point out that surviving pressure, peaking at the right moment, and executing an exceptional finale are exactly what the competition is designed to test. Rhoda’s season also included historic accomplishments of her own, including becoming only the fourth chef to return from Last Chance Kitchen and win the entire competition.
As a result, the current consensus among much of the fandom seems to be:
- Rhoda deserved the official title.
- Laurence may have been the season’s most consistent chef.
- Under a cumulative scoring system, the outcome might have been very different.
There is no evidence that the judges preferred Laurence or believed the wrong chef won. That’s purely fan speculation.
But among all the rumors circulating after the finale, this one has become one of the most widely discussed because it taps into a question that appears every season of Top Chef:
