Rhoda Magbitang may have won Top Chef: Carolinas, but one of the most talked-about storylines after the finale had nothing to do with the winning menu. Instead, it centered on her surprising decision to bring back Sieger Bayer as her sous chef, despite his controversial elimination and emotional outburst earlier in the season.

For many viewers, seeing Sieger return in the finale was unexpected.
The Chicago chef had become one of the season’s most polarizing contestants after a dramatic elimination that sparked debate among fans. During his exit episode, Sieger openly challenged the judges’ decision, questioned the outcome, and demanded to see the competition rules. According to reports from those involved with the production, the confrontation lasted much longer than what ultimately aired on television.

The moment quickly went viral among fans and became one of the defining controversies of Top Chef Season 23.
Yet when it came time for the finalists to choose sous chefs for the finale, Rhoda did not hesitate.
In a post-finale interview, the newly crowned champion revealed that Sieger had always been her first choice.
“Sieger was always going to be my first choice as a sous chef,” Rhoda said.
She acknowledged the controversy surrounding his elimination but emphasized that it never changed her opinion of his abilities in the kitchen.
“Notwithstanding what happened, and I know it got very heated. I wasn’t there so I can’t speak to it.”
For Rhoda, the decision came down to trust, technical skill, and reliability.
“That doesn’t take away from the fact he is one of the most technically sound chefs that I’ve ever met.”
She continued by praising his professionalism and work ethic despite the negative attention generated by his exit.
“He’s really responsible. Aside from that exit, he is very responsible and mature, and he can put his head down and I know he’ll pull through.”
Rhoda’s confidence ultimately proved justified.
Throughout the finale, Sieger worked quietly behind the scenes, helping execute the four-course meal that earned Rhoda the title of Top Chef and the $250,000 grand prize. Unlike the controversy that surrounded his departure, his return was largely drama-free, allowing viewers to see a different side of the chef.
Rhoda also pointed out that the pressure of Top Chef can push even the most accomplished chefs to their emotional limits.
“Top Chef is a really difficult place to cook.”
She noted that everyone in the competition was deeply invested in their success and that intense reactions were not necessarily surprising given the circumstances.
While Rhoda never directly defended Sieger’s outburst, her comments suggested she viewed it as a single moment rather than a complete reflection of who he is as a chef.
Veteran judge Gail Simmons has also weighed in on the controversy.
Speaking in a lengthy post-season interview, Simmons admitted that Sieger’s elimination and subsequent reaction caught the judges off guard. While she stood by the decision, she acknowledged that viewers only saw part of what happened.
According to Simmons, the judges believed Sieger’s dish simply fell short compared to the competition that day.
“It was very obvious to us that, although he had good intentions and good flavor, it was not a successful dish for a few reasons.”
At the same time, she recognized that the chef had delivered impressive food throughout much of the season.
“He had done some amazing things during the course of his trajectory on the show.”
Simmons revealed that the judges had occasionally heard whispers about Sieger’s confidence level during filming but said they were still surprised by the intensity of his response.
“We had heard a little bit of grumblings, small whiffs of perhaps overconfidence, but also he had done some amazing things food-wise.”
Even months later, Simmons admitted she was still trying to understand exactly what happened.
“I’m still trying to process it.”
She also expressed sympathy for contestants facing criticism in front of cameras.
“You are on camera being told what you failed at. That is an incredibly hard pill to swallow.”
According to Simmons, the pressure is especially intense by the time contestants reach the latter stages of the competition.
The chefs are exhausted, emotionally drained, and operating under extraordinary expectations. Given those conditions, she confessed that she is often surprised major breakdowns do not happen more frequently.
“I always say I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often.”
Because of Sieger’s dramatic exit, Simmons admitted she initially wondered whether bringing him back for the finale might create additional complications.
However, Rhoda’s unwavering confidence in him helped ease those concerns.
“I was wondering the same thing,” Simmons said when asked about Sieger’s return.
She ultimately concluded that he had moved past the disappointment and was fully committed to helping Rhoda succeed.
“He did calm down.”
The judge also noted that everything she had heard from Rhoda reinforced the idea that Sieger remained someone she trusted completely.
“She was so thrilled to have him and she knew he would show up for her.”
In the end, that trust paid off.
Rather than becoming another source of controversy, Sieger’s return became part of one of the season’s most uplifting stories. His assistance helped Rhoda deliver the winning meal, while his professional performance in the finale offered a contrast to the emotional exit that had defined his season.
For many fans, the finale served as a reminder that reality television often captures contestants at their most stressful moments. While Sieger’s elimination outburst remains one of the most memorable scenes of Top Chef: Carolinas, Rhoda’s unwavering support highlighted another side of the story—one built on friendship, respect, and belief in a fellow chef’s talent.
And when the season ended, it was that trust, more than any controversy, that helped produce a champion.
