The first elimination round of MasterChef – the “Game Day Gourmet”– is causing a major controversy because the new format shifts to team-based competition instead of purely individual competition as before. Many viewers argue that this creates a significant fairness issue, as if one chef wins the immunity challenge, the entire team benefits. The drama intensified in the Asia-Pacific team when Aishu won the immunity challenge, resulting in another team member being safe despite his dish being judged the worst of the night before Nora’s “Band-Aid Gate” incident. This has led to intense debate online about whether MasterChef is increasingly prioritizing reality and team dynamics over the actual individual abilities of each chef.

The first elimination episode of MasterChef Season 16 delivered exactly the kind of chaos fans expected from the new MasterChef: Global Gauntlet format — and by the end of the night, one contestant’s bandage disaster had completely overshadowed what was otherwise a massive breakout episode for another rising frontrunner.

MasterChef Season 16 Episode 5 recap: Game Day Gourmet

The “Game Day Gourmet” challenge marked the first real battle of the season after auditions concluded. Contestants were tasked with creating elevated stadium food inspired by their regional backgrounds, while competing alongside teammates from their global territories.

And almost immediately, the new format started revealing its brutal side.

Unlike previous seasons that focused purely on individual performance, Global Gauntlet forces contestants to carry the pressure of representing entire regions. A strong dish can protect an entire team. A weak performance can drag everyone into danger.

That pressure exploded into full drama during the episode.

The night’s biggest breakout star unexpectedly became Aishu from the Asia-Pacific team. While many contestants struggled under the pressure of the first challenge, Aishu delivered what the judges considered the strongest dish of the evening.

Gordon Ramsay praised the dish by saying she had “absolutely nailed” the challenge. Joe Bastianich applauded the balance of flavors, while Tiffany Derry admitted it was the kind of snack she would happily eat anytime.

The judges ultimately crowned Aishu’s plate the “dish of the night,” earning her the season’s first immunity pin.

But what truly changed the game was the consequence attached to her win.

Because Aishu secured immunity for Asia-Pacific, her entire regional team became safe from elimination — including contestant Shompa, who nearly became the center of another major controversy.

Late in the episode, Gordon Ramsay revealed that Shompa had actually produced one of the worst dishes of the night. Under normal circumstances, she likely would have landed directly in the elimination round.

Instead, Aishu’s victory saved her completely.

That twist immediately triggered debate online. Many viewers questioned whether it was fair for one standout contestant to rescue an entire team from consequences, especially when another teammate performed so poorly.

Others defended the format, arguing that Global Gauntlet is intentionally designed around regional survival and team responsibility rather than purely individual excellence.

And that debate became even louder once the episode’s main disaster unfolded.

While Aishu dominated the competition, contestant Nora completely unraveled under pressure.

Throughout the challenge, Nora appeared overwhelmed and disorganized, struggling to execute her stadium-food concept while judges openly questioned her direction. Things worsened after she cut her finger mid-challenge and needed medical attention, forcing medics to apply a bandage before she continued cooking.

Unfortunately, the bandage would later become the defining image of the entire episode.

During judging, Nora’s dish was already receiving harsh criticism. Gordon questioned the presentation and said the sandwich barely resembled the traditional dish she described. Joe criticized the confusing deconstructed concept, arguing it felt like “three dishes going into one.”

Then everything collapsed.

As the judges tasted the sandwich, Tiffany Derry suddenly discovered Nora’s bandage inside the food.

The reaction was immediate shock.

Tiffany visibly stopped eating and declared, “I’m done,” while the judging table instantly shifted from criticism to outright horror. In a competition built around professional kitchen standards, a hygiene mistake of that scale effectively ended Nora’s chances on the spot.

The elimination itself barely felt suspenseful afterward.

Nora became the first contestant sent home from Season 16, and fans online quickly labeled the moment one of the most infamous “rookie mistakes” in recent MasterChef history.

But beyond the bandage incident, Episode 5 revealed something much bigger about the season itself.

Global Gauntlet is clearly not just a normal individual cooking competition anymore.

The format has transformed the show into a regional survival battle where contestants are now responsible not only for their own dishes, but also for protecting teammates, carrying weaker cooks, and avoiding becoming the person who drags an entire territory down.

That shift is already changing the drama completely.

The central question of the season is no longer simply “Who cooked badly?”

Now it’s becoming:

“Who is hurting their entire region?”
