Alex Stupak’s path through the Bobby’s Triple Threat Season 5 premiere was not simply a series of random matchups. The challenger had to choose which Titan to face in each round, and his final order — Brooke Williamson, Michael Voltaggio, then Ayesha Nurdjaja — revealed a surprisingly calculated strategy.
With three elite chefs standing between him and the $25,000 prize, Alex had to decide not only who he wanted to face, but when he wanted to face them.
ROUND 1: BROOKE WILLIAMSON

Alex’s first choice was Brooke Williamson.
The decision was strategic. Alex viewed Brooke as an especially unpredictable Titan with a strong ability to analyze what was happening in the competition. Rather than allowing her to observe too much of the game and potentially figure out how Buddha Lo was judging the dishes, Alex wanted to confront her immediately.
In other words, Alex wanted to remove one of the most difficult-to-read Titans from the equation before the competition progressed.
It was a risky opening move.
Brooke ultimately defeated Alex in the first round, giving the Titan an early advantage and putting Stupak under immediate pressure.
But Alex still had two choices remaining.
ROUND 2: MICHAEL VOLTAGGIO

For the second round, Alex made an even more surprising decision.
He chose Michael Voltaggio.
This was not simply a battle against another elite chef. Michael was also Alex’s longtime friend, making the matchup considerably more personal.
Alex could have viewed that relationship as a reason to avoid Michael. Instead, he went straight toward it.
After suffering the disappointment of Round 1, Alex even tried to lighten the atmosphere by jokingly referring to Michael as “Michael the Magician.” The playful exchange highlighted just how unusual the matchup was: two longtime friends suddenly had to become opponents in one of the most intense kitchens in food television.
But there was strategy behind the choice.
By selecting Michael in Round 2, Alex avoided leaving one of his most familiar opponents for the decisive final battle. He could confront Michael immediately, then potentially enter the last round against the remaining Titan with the most important advantage of all: the ability to choose the ingredients.
Michael narrowly won the round, but Alex had managed to keep himself within striking distance.
That left only one Titan.
ROUND 3: AYESHA NURDJaja

With Brooke and Michael already selected, Ayesha Nurdjaja became Alex’s final opponent.
And the timing could not have been more important.
The third round was worth double points, meaning Alex could still erase the deficit despite trailing the Titans after the first two battles.
More importantly, Alex had the power to choose the ingredients.
He selected orange blossom water and Sicilian pistachios, creating a difficult final test and forcing Ayesha to work with an ingredient that can be particularly challenging to balance.
Alex even offered a hilarious explanation for why he had saved Ayesha for the final round: she was the only Titan who did not follow him on Instagram.
Ayesha laughed at the playful jab, but Alex’s decision ultimately had serious consequences.
The final round gave him exactly what he needed: an opportunity to turn a five-point deficit into a victory.
A THREE-STEP STRATEGY
Looking back, Alex’s selection order was remarkably clear:
BROOKE → MICHAEL → AYESHA
First, he took on Brooke, the Titan he considered difficult to predict.
Then he selected Michael, his longtime friend and another dangerous competitor, rather than allowing him to remain as a potential final-round obstacle.
Finally, he faced Ayesha in the round where every point was worth twice as much and Alex controlled the ingredient selection.
It was a gamble from the beginning.
And although the strategy did not produce an immediate victory in the first two rounds, it ultimately gave Alex the exact opportunity he needed.
He didn’t just choose three Titans. He chose the order in which he wanted to dismantle them.
