For nearly two decades, Beat Bobby Flay has challenged chefs from across the country to do what few have managed—defeat one of Food Network’s most accomplished culinary stars. Now, Bobby Flay himself has revealed the strategy he believes gives contestants the best chance of finally beating him.

During a recent Instagram Stories Q&A, a fan asked the 61-year-old celebrity chef a simple but intriguing question: “What’s the smartest strategy to beat you on Beat Bobby Flay?”

Rather than keeping his weaknesses a secret, Flay answered with surprising honesty.

“Usually I’d pick something that I’m definitely going to struggle with,” he said before revealing two categories that consistently put him at a disadvantage: desserts and Asian cuisine.

The admission caught many fans off guard. While Flay is widely regarded as one of America’s greatest chefs, he acknowledged that baking has never been his strongest skill. Unlike savory cooking, desserts require exact measurements and precise techniques, leaving far less room for improvisation—something Flay has admitted he doesn’t particularly enjoy.

Earlier this year, he was asked whether he likes baking challenges on the long-running competition series.

“It’s not my favorite thing to do,” Flay admitted. “I feel out of my comfort zone, but I enjoy the challenge.”

Asian cuisine presents a different obstacle. Although Flay has extensive experience cooking a wide range of international dishes, he suggested that contestants with deep expertise in authentic Asian cooking can often force him outside his culinary comfort zone, creating a much more even contest.

Flay also revealed another mistake he sees competitors make over and over again on Beat Bobby Flay.

According to the Food Network star, many chefs lose because they abandon the recipe that earned them a place on the show in the first place.

“They make a ‘special’ version of their signature dish,” Flay explained in a previous social media Q&A. “That’s where it always goes wrong.”

Instead of showcasing the dish they know best, contestants often try to elevate or reinvent it for television, adding unnecessary techniques or ingredients in hopes of impressing the judges. Flay believes that decision frequently backfires.

His advice is simple: trust the recipe that made you successful instead of trying to create something completely new under the pressure of competition.

The celebrity chef has become known for regularly answering fan questions on social media, and he recently told People that his popular Instagram Q&A sessions are far less rehearsed than many fans might assume.

“I swear to you, I answer those questions in under four minutes,” Flay said during the South Beach Wine & Food Festival 2026. His team gathers the questions, but the answers are entirely spontaneous because he wants every response to feel natural and authentic.

Of course, cooking isn’t the only topic fans ask about.

Flay admitted that one of the subjects that comes up most frequently is his relationship with fellow Food Network star Brooke Williamson, whom he has been dating for more than a year.

“I think probably the most popular questions are about Brooke, cooking, and things like that because, for some reason, people care about my love life,” he joked. “I’m not sure why, but they do. So ask away.”

His romance with Williamson has also become part of the storyline on BBQ Brawl Season 7, where Brooke transitioned from judge to team captain alongside Flay and defending champion Maneet Chauhan.

After the season premiere, another fan asked Flay what he thought about Maneet’s strategy of using his relationship with Brooke against him during the competition.

Flay responded with his trademark humor.

“Smart strategy. Brooke is focused on winning, Maneet is the defending champion… I’m the odd man out.”
