A HARDCORE Barry Manilow fan’s lifelong dream turned into the bitterest humiliation in history when a ban on meeting his idol was issued at the very last minute.
Devastated Wayne Denton, 69, shelled out a whopping £2,400 on mega-exclusive VIP tickets to see the US megastar live in concert. The premium package promised the ultimate fan experience: a coveted after-show meet-and-greet where Wayne could finally look the ‘Copacabana’ hitmaker in the eye.
But instead of a dream photo-op with the 83-year-old music icon, Wayne was left burning with shame when security guards branded his look the “ultimate insult” and barred him from entering the room.
The reason? Wayne’s passionately crafted tribute outfit—including a custom wig and a flashy orange blazer—was deemed too much for the music legend’s entourage to handle.
Wayne, from Stourbridge in the West Midlands, has dedicated years to honoring his idol. He even fronts his very own Manilow tribute act called Celebrating Barry. Naturally, when it came to the biggest night of his life, he wanted to look the part.
He arrived at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena alongside his pal Janet Martin, 54, who performs as a backing singer in his tribute show. The pair had splashed out £1,200 each for the top-tier VIP treatment.
Wayne was proudly wearing a vibrant orange jacket—almost identical to the iconic stage wear Barry himself has worn during his glittering career. He topped off the look with a flowing wig to mimic Manilow’s famous coif.
But as the final notes of ‘Mandy’ faded and the excited crowd headed backstage, Wayne’s world came crashing down.
Stunned Wayne was stopped dead in his tracks by tight-lipped event organizers. He was hit with a brutal ultimatum: he would only be allowed through the doors if he stripped off his jacket and ripped off his hair.
Speaking exclusively about his backstage nightmare, a shattered Wayne said: “I was humiliated. Completely humiliated.
“They told me I couldn’t go in like that. It’s a wig I wear partly because I’ve got no hair, so asking me to take it off in front of everyone was just awful.”

Shocking footage captured at the scene shows the tense standoff unfolding just moments before the meet-and-greet was due to start. A stern staff member can be heard laying down the law to the heartbroken superfan.
In the clip, the official bluntly states: “We can’t do the wig and jacket. It’s insulting to Barry.”
Wayne, who had spent months meticulously preparing for the encounter, was left completely blindsided by the sudden wardrobe crackdown. He insists that no dress code or rules regarding costumes were ever mentioned when he purchased the pricey VIP passes.
“I’ve loved Barry for decades,” Wayne added. “To be told right at the final hurdle that my outfit—which was meant as the ultimate sign of respect—was actually an ‘insult’ was a dagger to the heart. I’m his biggest fan, not a threat!”
Instead of sharing a laugh and a glass of champagne with the pop maestro, Wayne and Janet were turned away at the door, permanently banned from ever shaking hands with the star.
Organizers later tried to cool down the raging row by offering the pair a full refund for their £2,400 tickets. But for Wayne, no amount of cash can heal the emotional scars of his Liverpool nightmare.
The ‘Copacabana’ singer’s team has been contacted for comment, but for Wayne, the music has well and short stopped. It seems that when it comes to meeting Barry, looking like your idol is the ultimate sin!
