BBC Radio 2 star announces she’s quit job as she tells fans ‘watch this space’
Tina Daheley has been a staple of BBC Radio 2’s morning news coverage, but on Tuesday morning she confirmed she would be leaving her job as tributes flooded in for her

A BBC Radio 2 star has confirmed she is leaving her job after more than seven years. Fans have rushed to pay tribute to the star as she admitted she is not sure what will be next for her.

Tina Daheley took to her Instagram page on Tuesday morning (June 16) to break the news to her fans that she would be leaving her role as a news presenter on the station’s morning shows. She confirmed she would be staying for some time but would be working elsewhere at the BBC after the summer.

Fans were quick to rush to the comments section to wish Tina well as she starts her new journey away from the breakfast show. Tina herself also gave her backing to Sara Cox, who is set to take over the breakfast show from Scott Mills after he was fired in March.

Writing in the post, she said: “After more than 7 years of early alarm calls on Radio 2, I’m stepping away from Radio 2 Breakfast. It’s been one of the greatest privileges of my life to wake up with you every morning and humbling to have been trusted to deliver the news on the biggest breakfast show in Europe.”

She continued: “My breakfast run ends at Radio 2, but it all started on 1Xtra, where I landed my dream job reading the news on Trevor Nelson’s Breakfast Show. From there, I spent a decade broadcasting to 1 in 4 young people in the UK on Radio 1.

“After 18 years and six back-to-back breakfast shows (probably a record in there somewhere), I’m looking forward to a lie-in,” she added. “Wishing Sara and her team the very best of luck, I’ll be tuning in while doing the school run.

“I’m not leaving Radio 2, you’ll hear me between 12-2pm when Jeremy’s away and you’ll see me on BBC One after the summer. Beyond that, watch this space,” she ended.

Fans were quick to rush to the comments to thank Tina for all of her hard work delivering the news, with many praising the way she handled tough stories throughout her time as a presenter. One penned: “Awww, will miss your steady delivery of the news in the morning! Good luck for the future!”

A second added: “Thank you for being the calming voice giving us the daily news every morning. We’ve loved listening to you and your friendship with each and every breakfast show host and their team. All the best.”

Meanwhile a third said: “Aww sad to hear this news I’ve grown up listening to you reading the news. Enjoy your lie ins and time with your family and good luck for whatever comes next. You will be much missed.”

Tina first joined the BBC Radio 2 team back in 2019 when Zoe Ball took over from Chris Evans as part of a shake-up to the team. Since then, she has become a staple of the BBC’s newscasting services, becoming a regular face on BBC Breakfast, as well as the channel’s News at One.
