MasterChef Meghan reveals Prince Harry’s favourite foods… and if he can ‘handle a curry’

The Duchess of Sussex told food lovers on MasterChef Australia that her husband Harry is ‘a real meat and potatoes guy’.

She also revealed that, while the duke favours comfort food, he can also ‘handle a really good curry’.

Meghan, 44, shared the prince’s favourite dishes during her appearance as a guest judge on the cooking show, which was screened on Sunday night. When asked what her favourite food was, she said it was ‘a tough one because I have a lot of palettes to appease’.

While she preferred grilled fish, she added: ‘My husband, being from the UK, he loves a lot of meat, potatoes, cream sauces.

‘As a California girl, I like a grilled fish, grilled meats, citrus. I just like using lots of really pure natural herbs and spices. I like heat in my food, anything with spices. He [Harry] can handle a really good curry. We just do a lot of barbecues, whatever is seasonal. The kids are great eaters, we are very lucky on that front.’

Meghan filmed the episode when the couple were on their four-day tour of Australia in April. No longer working royals, they visited in a private capacity.

After trying a contestant’s celeriac-based dish, Meghan said: ‘I mentioned my husband was a real meat and potatoes guy. This feels like the most elegant, elevated version of that. H would love this dish.’

A producer then said: ‘Sorry to interrupt. We’ve had a phone call to the studio,’ as Meghan proceeded to FaceTime Harry as a treat for the Australian viewers.

In what has been labelled by fans as a ‘cringe’ cameo, Meghan said ‘My husband’s here’, prompting cheers and shocked faces from contestants. She later called him ‘a charmer’.

‘I wish you could try these. These dishes are fantastic,’ she cooed, before showing him the food. Harry, 41, signed off by telling her to enjoy it, adding: ‘Very sorry to disturb.’

Contestants were set the task of transforming a staple ingredient into a dish ‘fit for a duchess’, although she urged her fellow judges to ‘call me Meghan’.

It was a far cry from when actress Mindy Kaling appeared as a guest on her Netflix series With Love, Meghan last year and the duchess reprimanded her for using her maiden name Markle: ‘You know I’m Sussex now.’

After being introduced by MasterChef host, Poh Ling Yeow, as a guest judge, Meghan strode on to the set wearing a black silk shirt and pencil skirt.

She talked about her children, saying that Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, are ‘great eaters’ and even enjoy Brussels sprouts.

Talking about her garden, she said if the children say, ‘Mama, can I have dessert?’ she replies, ‘If you can pick it, you can have it.’
