For years, Cindy Crawford and Richard Gere seemed to have left their whirlwind marriage firmly in the past. Once one of Hollywood’s most glamorous couples, the supermodel and the Pretty Woman star went from a highly publicized romance to a private divorce, eventually becoming little more than strangers in each other’s lives. Yet more than three decades after their marriage ended, an unexpected connection has brought their worlds together again: their children, Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere, have become co-stars in Ryan Murphy’s upcoming miniseries The Shards.

The development has created a surprising bridge between two people whose relationship once dominated headlines. Cindy, now 60, and Richard, 76, have largely kept their distance since their divorce in 1995. But with their children now working side by side, the former couple appears to have found an unexpected reason to lower their defenses and reconnect.

A source told Globe that the two are now “dropping their defenses and playing nice,” suggesting that their children’s new professional relationship has encouraged them to put old differences aside. The reunion is particularly striking given Cindy’s previous comments about how distant she and Richard eventually became.

Cindy and Richard were considered a power couple of the early 1990s. Their romance began in the late 1980s, when Cindy was just 22 and Richard was 39. They first met at a barbecue hosted by photographer Herb Ritts, and the connection was immediate. At the time, Cindy was building her career as a full-time model in New York, having launched that chapter of her life in 1986, while Richard was already an established Hollywood actor known for films including Breathless, The Cotton Club, American Gigolo and An Officer and a Gentleman.

For Cindy, the relationship began during a formative period of her life. Looking back in the Apple TV documentary The Super Models, she explained that young people can sometimes adapt themselves to the person they love. Speaking on the WTF podcast in 2016, she said that she did not know whether they had ever truly been friends or peers because she was young and he was Richard Gere.

As Cindy matured, her understanding of herself and what she wanted from a relationship also changed. She later explained that her twenties were a period when she was learning to recognize her own strength and independence. At 22, she had been more comfortable following the person she loved. But as she approached 30, she increasingly wanted to lead sometimes and walk beside her partner as an equal.

Despite the painful end of the marriage, Cindy has never portrayed the relationship as entirely negative. She has spoken about the valuable lessons she learned from Richard, particularly regarding fame and personal boundaries. Watching how he dealt with fans taught her how to establish boundaries that felt comfortable for her. She also described him as intelligent, interesting and someone from whom she learned a great deal about the world.

After their divorce, Cindy eventually found lasting love with businessman Rande Gerber. The couple became parents to Kaia and Presley Gerber, with Kaia later following her mother’s footsteps into modeling and acting. Richard, meanwhile, married twice more and became a father to three boys, including two young sons with his wife Alejandra Silva.

Now, years after their separate lives moved in different directions, the former couple has an unexpected connection through their children.

Kaia, 24, and Homer, 26, recently joined the cast of The Shards, bringing the families of Cindy and Richard together in a way few could have predicted. The series, developed by Ryan Murphy and based on Bret Easton Ellis’ bestselling novel, has already generated significant attention because of its dark, violent and sexually charged storyline.

Homer revealed that he and Kaia had never actually met before becoming part of the production. Their first meeting happened only about two weeks before filming, when the cast gathered at a bar. Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding their connection, Homer said Kaia was lovely and that the two quickly became close.

He also acknowledged that they were both aware of the obvious elephant in the room: their famous parents had once been married. Rather than allowing that history to create awkwardness, however, the two young actors addressed the situation and developed a close working relationship.

In The Shards, Igby Rigney plays Bret, an aspiring writer whose life begins to unravel after the arrival of a mysterious new student, Robert Mallory, portrayed by Homer. Kaia plays Susan Reynolds, a member of Bret’s privileged social circle, alongside Hayes Warner and Graham Campbell. Their characters become caught up in a world of wealth, beauty, parties and excess as a serial killer known as The Trawler begins targeting teenagers across Los Angeles.

The project was initially being developed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Luca Guadagnino for HBO, but that version ultimately fell through. It was later revived under Murphy and FX, giving the story a new opportunity to reach the screen.

For Kaia and Homer, the series represents an important step in their respective careers. Kaia has already established herself as a major name in fashion, winning Model of the Year at the British Fashion Awards in 2018 and appearing on the cover of Vogue several times. She has also expanded into acting, with credits including Palm Royale and the Anne Hathaway film Mother Mary.

Homer, meanwhile, is stepping further into the spotlight through The Shards, giving audiences an opportunity to see him establish an identity of his own on screen.

What makes the project particularly intriguing, however, is not simply the potential rise of two young stars. It is the unlikely chain of events that has brought their famous parents back into the same orbit.

Cindy and Richard’s marriage may have ended more than 30 years ago, but the next generation has created a new connection between them. Their children did not inherit the same relationship their parents once had; instead, they have formed their own friendship and professional partnership.
