Much of Jesy’s attention in recent months has therefore been focused on campaigning to raise awareness of SMA and pushing for changes to newborn testing. Screening can involve a heel-prick blood test performed shortly after a baby is born, potentially allowing the condition to be detected before serious symptoms emerge. Jesy has said she is extremely proud that Ocean and Story’s experience has contributed to a wider conversation about screening and hopes that one day she will be able to explain to her daughters how their story helped create change. She has even described the condition as something she wants them eventually to see as their “little superpower,” rather than allowing their diagnosis alone to define their lives. At the same time, the campaign has been emotionally exhausting, particularly when political decisions have not matched the changes she hoped to see.
