The final showdown at Tournament of Champions Season 7 went down in history when Bryan Voltaggio won by a narrow margin – just one point. This nail-biting victory was even more cruel for Kenny Gilbert, as an improbable error in his performance unexpectedly became the fatal blow, causing him to miss out on the championship title in a heartbreaking manner.

The Tournament of Champions (TOC) Season 7 finale, according to Guy Fieri, was “a battle we will never forget.” This was especially true, as the Food Network show saw a historic first— a male chef won the coveted title of TOC champion.

With the final four set—Kenny Gilbert, Kevin Lee, Jet Tila, and Bryan Voltaggio—the competition was fierce, and the stakes were higher than ever. Each contestant brought a wealth of skill and experience, making the semifinal and final rounds an exhilarating showcase of talent. Tiffani Faison, one of the judges, remarked that she wanted both Jet and Kevin to make it to the final, reflecting the competitive balance among all four chefs.

Notably, only female chefs had ever won the Tournament of Champions before, which was a striking contrast to other culinary competitions like Top Chef, where male chefs have dominated. TOC’s blind judging system removes all biases, focusing entirely on the food, as Mei Lin explained: “There’s just really no biases.” This approach was vital in creating a level playing field for all the chefs.

Kevin Lee vs. Jet Tila: A Battle of Experience and Determination

In the first semifinal match, Kevin Lee faced Jet Tila. Jet, having reached the semifinals more times than anyone else, was determined to finally reach the final round. “I feel the best I have in all of these seven years,” Jet said, referring to his ongoing battle with the semifinals. His goal was clear: “I’m here to finish this chapter” and “destroy Kevin,” who he saw as standing in his way. But Kevin had other plans. “Today I am slaying that dragon, Uncle Jet!” he declared, showing his confidence.

The Randomizer revealed the challenge ingredients: salmon belly, cauliflower mushrooms, banana leaves, white, and ostrich egg—ingredients both chefs found challenging. Jet created an ostrich egg omelet and salmon belly white donburi, while Kevin prepared salmon belly hoe-deopbap over mushroom rice with a savory meringue and rice paper puff.

Judges, including Cat Cora, Brooke Williamson, Mei Lin, and David Chang, found both dishes exceptional, but Kevin’s dish stood out. Mei Lin praised his dish for its textures and how he managed to hit the “white” color challenge. Jet’s dish was also praised but didn’t fully align with the color requirement, which ultimately cost him a chance to advance to the final.

Kevin Lee won with a score of 83, while Jet Tila scored 81. Despite his loss, Jet remained gracious, acknowledging that Kevin had played the game better. “It hurts, but Kevin played a great game,” Jet admitted backstage, as he reflected on yet another semifinal defeat. Jet, however, vowed not to quit. “I’m going to rest, get some therapy, and I’ll come back next year.”

The second semifinal was a showdown between Bryan Voltaggio and Kenny Gilbert. Bryan, who had been eliminated in the first round in his previous TOC appearances, was eager to make up for past disappointments. “This is my year,” Bryan said, determined to break his streak of losses. Meanwhile, Kenny, a first-timer in TOC, had already made history by advancing to the final four from the qualifiers—a feat that had never been accomplished before.

The challenge ingredients for this round included chicken liver, kohlrabi, spaetzle maker, pink, and crown melon. Kenny prepared a Szechuan chicken liver dish with kohlrabi melon puree and spaetzle, while Bryan made chicken fried chicken livers with pink spaetzle and kohlrabi yogurt sauce.

Bryan’s dish impressed the judges with its sophistication and execution, earning him a near-perfect score of 94, while Kenny’s dish scored 88. Despite Kenny’s strong showing, it was Bryan who advanced to the final. His perfect presentation score of 10 from all the judges was a highlight of the round. “I’ve never seen my name so many times on that board, chef,” Bryan said, as he prepared for the final battle.

The final round was an intense cook-off between Kevin Lee and Bryan Voltaggio. With the Randomizer presenting the challenge of live king crab, fresh water chestnuts, a pressure cooker, and the dual challenges of breakfast and dinner, both chefs were in for a tough ride.

Bryan prepared a king crab and grits breakfast and tempura-fried crab leg for dinner, while Kevin made king crab juk for breakfast and Korean fried king crab with fried rice for dinner. Both chefs showcased their culinary skills, but it was Bryan’s ability to perfectly cook the crab and his refined presentation that won over the judges. While both dishes received praise, Bryan’s score of 84 narrowly edged out Kevin’s 83.

Despite the tight margin, Bryan’s win was a testament to his consistent excellence. “I wanted to prove that I had what it takes to come out and win,” Bryan said, overwhelmed by the victory. His win was especially sweet, as it marked his first-ever solo victory in his television cooking career—17 years after losing Top Chef to his brother Michael, and less than a year after defeating him on another show.

A Personal Triumph

Bryan Voltaggio’s victory was not only a culinary achievement but also a personal triumph. Reflecting on the win, Bryan shared how his brother Michael, who had been his mentor and biggest supporter, was an integral part of his success. “My brother is my best friend, he’s my mentor, he’s my biggest supporter,” Bryan said, emphasizing the importance of family support in his journey. The win was a long time coming, and Bryan was finally able to prove that he had what it took to be a champion.

Bryan’s victory in Tournament of Champions Season 7 marked a historic moment in the show’s history, as a male chef claimed the title for the first time. It was a well-deserved victory, and for Bryan, it was the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and the support of his family.
