FANS CAN’T BELIEVE THEIR EYES! Matt Lucas looks completely different from his Little Britain days, leaving The One Show viewers stunned by his new appearance — and one new detail he tried his best to hide, but eagle-eyed fans still managed to spot.

Matt Lucas surprised television viewers this week after appearing with a dramatically different look as he prepares for one of his latest major stage roles.

Matt Lucas trông hoàn toàn khác biệt so với thời còn đóng trong Little Britain khi anh khiến khán giả chương trình The One Show kinh ngạc với diện mạo mới và bộ râu "kỳ lạ" trong tập phát sóng hôm thứ Tư.

The 52-year-old comedian and actor appeared on BBC One’s The One Show on Wednesday, August 26, where he joined presenters Clara Amfo and JB Gill. While Lucas was there primarily to discuss his upcoming West End work, much of the attention quickly shifted to the facial hair he has been growing in preparation for playing Fagin in Oliver!.

For audiences accustomed to seeing the Little Britain star clean-shaven, the change was particularly noticeable. Lucas has lived with alopecia since childhood and has been bald for most of his public career, making the sight of him with a developing beard an unexpected transformation.

During the interview, Lucas jokingly referred to it as his “bizarre beard” and explained that he had never previously tried to grow a full one. The closest he had come was keeping a moustache for around three weeks during the pandemic.

That changed after he learned he would be taking over the role of Fagin in Lionel Bart’s classic musical Oliver!.

Around seven weeks before his appearance on The One Show, Lucas decided simply to stop shaving and see what would happen. The experiment produced the facial hair viewers saw on television, and the comedian made light of his new appearance by joking that he might continue growing the beard until it reached his ankles.

He even imagined finding a practical use for an enormously long beard during cold football matches, suggesting it could eventually double as a scarf in winter. The presenters appeared amused by the idea, while Gill complimented Lucas on his new look.

A childhood experience that shaped his appearance

The conversation also gave Lucas an opportunity to speak again about his experience with alopecia.

He lost his scalp hair when he was six years old. Lucas has previously connected the condition to the delayed emotional shock he experienced following a serious road accident during his childhood. He has described noticing increasing amounts of hair on his pillow before eventually losing all of it.

Growing up bald was not always easy. Lucas has recalled being bullied over his appearance, although the feature that made him stand out as a child would eventually become closely associated with his career as a performer.

It also proved useful in his character comedy. With wigs, costumes and make-up, Lucas could repeatedly transform himself into dramatically different personalities — something that became a defining feature of Little Britain, the BBC sketch show he created and starred in alongside David Walliams.

Now, rather than relying on a wig or elaborate make-up, his own facial hair is giving audiences another version of the familiar comedian.

Viewers do a double take

The transformation did not go unnoticed online.

Following his appearance on The One Show, viewers posted reactions on social media saying that Lucas looked remarkably different. Some admitted that they had not immediately recognised him, while others praised the beard and said they were looking forward to seeing how the finished look would work when he takes to the stage as Fagin.

It is not the first time Lucas’s changing appearance has attracted attention in recent years.

When he appeared on The One Show earlier in 2026 to discuss his work in Les Misérables, viewers also commented on his much slimmer figure. Lucas has previously spoken publicly about losing a significant amount of weight after reaching as high as a XXXL clothing size and later dropping to around a medium.

He has explained that his decision to rethink his lifestyle was influenced partly by his family history. His father died suddenly at the age of 52 when Lucas was only 22, while his grandfather also died in his mid-50s. During the pandemic, Lucas felt he was continuing to gain weight and eventually decided to make changes, although he has also said that becoming fitter remained a separate goal from simply becoming slimmer.

Preparing to become Fagin

Lucas’s new beard comes ahead of a limited six-week engagement in Oliver! at London’s Gielgud Theatre.

He is scheduled to play Fagin from September 22 until November 1, 2026, temporarily taking over the role in the West End production. The acclaimed revival of Lionel Bart’s musical has been reconceived by producer Cameron Mackintosh together with director and choreographer Matthew Bourne.

The casting carries some personal significance for Lucas. He has said that Oliver! was the first West End musical he saw, when he was six years old, and that appearing in the show has long been an ambition.

Fagin also represents another major musical-theatre role for the performer after his return as Thénardier in Les Misérables: The Arena Concert Spectacular. Lucas has played Thénardier on several occasions during his career and recently took part in productions connected with the musical’s 40th-anniversary celebrations.

His résumé extends far beyond the stage. Lucas became a household name through Little Britain and has also appeared in Doctor Who, Alice in Wonderland, Bridesmaids and numerous other film and television projects. He later became a familiar face to another generation of viewers as a presenter of The Great British Bake Off.

Another major television appearance is coming

The West End is not the only place viewers will be seeing Lucas this autumn.

He is also part of the line-up for Series 22 of Channel 4’s Taskmaster, alongside Richard Ayoade, Nina Conti, Isy Suttie and Chloe Petts. The new series is due to begin on September 3, with Greg Davies returning as the Taskmaster and Alex Horne once again serving as his assistant.

That means Lucas is entering an especially busy period: a new series of one of Britain’s biggest comedy entertainment programmes followed only weeks later by his limited West End run.

For the moment, however, it is his beard that has become the unlikely talking point.

What began as a simple decision to stop shaving for a theatre character has given the famously bald comedian one of his most noticeable transformations in years — and if Lucas follows through on his joke about allowing it to reach his ankles, his current look may only be the beginning.
