IT’S ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO ACCEPT! Tara Dexter, a widow who purchased a neglected plot of land covered in dumped rubbish in Sidlesham, West Sussex, for £57,000 while grieving the loss of her longtime partner Gary. Following the dream she and her late partner had shared, Tara spent two years transforming the abandoned site into her dream smallholding and turned it into a wonderful play area for children. But just as everything had finally come together and children from nearby primary schools had fallen in love with the space, the local council suddenly made a SHOCKING DECISION that left the grieving widow devastated — while the children who once played there and their parents were left completely stunned and speechless.

A widow who spent years transforming a neglected piece of land into a thriving mini farm says she is facing the loss of her dream project after a council ordered the removal of structures she says are essential to keeping the site running.

Tara Dexter bought the abandoned plot in Sidlesham, West Sussex, for £57,000 after the death of her partner Gary. She says the land, which was once filled with dumped rubbish, vehicle parts, and unwanted waste, became a place of healing and a way to rebuild her life after devastating personal loss.

However, her vision has now become the center of a planning dispute with Chichester District Council, which says a container and several sheds on the land do not comply with countryside planning regulations.

From Forgotten Land to Wildlife Sanctuary

When Dexter first purchased the site, she said it was far from the peaceful countryside retreat she had imagined.

The land had reportedly been neglected for years, with fly-tipping leaving behind piles of rubbish, old car parts, and other unwanted materials. Determined to restore the area, Dexter began clearing the site and gradually created what she describes as a small working farm.

Over time, she planted thousands of trees and plants, added hedgerows, installed fencing, and created a space where animals, wildlife, and local children could enjoy the outdoors.

The property is now home to animals including pigs, chickens, and peacocks, while deer and birds of prey have reportedly returned to the area.

Dexter also created outdoor features for visitors, including a willow structure used by children, including those with disabilities, who visit the land for educational activities.

A Lifeline After Personal Tragedy

For Dexter, the mini farm represents much more than a piece of land.

She said the project helped her cope after losing her partner Gary, who died from an aggressive form of brain cancer after a sudden diagnosis.

The couple had shared a dream of owning a small piece of countryside where they could live closer to nature. After his death, Dexter decided to continue that dream alone.

She described the farm as a place that helped her survive one of the most difficult periods of her life.

Dexter said she invested significant time, money, and personal effort into restoring the land, removing dangerous waste, and creating an environment that benefits both animals and the wider community.

Planning Dispute With The Council

The dispute centers around a storage container and sheds that Dexter says are necessary for maintaining the site.

She explained that she purchased a container and modified its appearance with wooden cladding so it would blend into the countryside. According to her, the structure is practical rather than a permanent building and allows her to continue caring for the animals and managing the land.

However, Chichester District Council refused planning permission for the container in 2024, arguing that it conflicted with policies designed to protect the rural landscape.

The council also pointed out that the land is located within a floodplain and said the structure had an unacceptable impact on the appearance of the countryside.

A planning inspector later supported the council’s decision, stating that the container appeared out of place in its rural surroundings and that alternative solutions had not been demonstrated.

Fear She May Have to Sell the Farm

Dexter says she is now facing the possibility of losing the project she spent years building.

Without the container and sheds, she believes she will not be able to continue operating the mini farm.

She has suggested that she may eventually have no choice but to sell the land, despite the emotional connection she has developed with the site.

The widow said she believes the council is overlooking the positive changes she has made and the benefits the land now provides to wildlife and local children.

Council Defends Its Decision

Chichester District Council said its actions were not about stopping the restoration of the land but about enforcing planning rules that protect rural areas.

The authority explained that both the council and the independent planning inspector concluded the structure caused harm to the character of the countryside.

Officials said enforcement action had been taken requiring the removal of the container, although Dexter has appealed the decision and the matter remains under consideration by the Planning Inspectorate.

A Battle Between Rules and Restoration

The case has highlighted a wider debate about how planning regulations should balance environmental protection with individual efforts to improve neglected land.

Supporters of Dexter argue that she has transformed a previously abandoned site into a valuable community space and wildlife area.

Authorities, however, maintain that planning laws exist to prevent inappropriate development in protected rural landscapes.

For Dexter, the dispute is not simply about a building or a planning application — it represents the future of the place that helped her recover from personal tragedy.

As the appeal process continues, the fate of her mini farm remains uncertain. For now, the widow continues fighting to protect the countryside project she believes has brought new life to a once-forgotten piece of land.
