In a heart-wrenching tribute following one of the deadliest road traffic incidents involving law enforcement in recent history, the grieving family of PC Matthew Blades has paid tribute to a dedicated public servant, describing him as a “superhero” and the “most devoted father”.
PC Matthew Blades, 37, and his colleague PC Tom Clough, 38, lost their lives in the line of duty during the early hours of Saturday morning along the A66 motorway near Middlesbrough. The marked armed response vehicle carrying both officers was struck head-on by a Volkswagen Passat traveling the wrong way against the flow of traffic. All seven occupants across both vehicles, including five young men inside the Passat, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Breaking her silence, PC Bladesβ wife shared a poignant message reflecting on her husbandβs unwavering love for his family and his commitment to serving his community. PC Blades’ widow said on Sunday evening ‘no words will ever feel like the right words to honour our Matt’, who she described as ‘my beloved husband, my best friend, and the most devoted father to our two young boys’.
‘He was an adored son and brother, a perfect son-in-law, and the most fun uncle. He was loved beyond words by all his family and friends, and his loss has left a spaceΒ that can never be filled.
‘He gave his life in the line of duty, protecting and serving others with courage, dedication and selflessness. The pain of losing him is beyond words, and our lives will never be the same. Neither will the love he gave us ever fade.
‘Our children will grow up knowing what an incredible father he was and will always be, and I will carry his love, his memory and everything we shared with me always.’
The fatal collision occurred around 3:39 AM on Saturday along the A66 dual carriageway in Teesside. According to reports from the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), officers had briefly pursued the Volkswagen Passat after it was spotted behaving suspiciously. When the vehicle entered the A66 in the wrong direction, police immediately aborted the pursuit on safety grounds, traveling on the correct side of the carriageway. Moments laterβapproximately 10 seconds after the pursuit was terminatedβthe Passat collided with the marked police unit driven by PC Blades and PC Clough.
