THEIR SON IS NOT TO BLAME! The family of one of the men killed in the A66 crash has blamed police, claiming that more lives could have been saved if officers had not attempted to pursue the five young men travelling in the wrong direction last weekend. The family’s actions have sparked widespread outrage among the public. But the situation did not end there. Just as the backlash reached its peak, the “troubled” family suddenly released NEW EVIDENCE — causing public opinion to completely shift, with the criticism disappearing almost instantly.

Family of Jacob Matusiak have spoken out that they 'want answers'

The family of Michael Robert Cahill has remembered him as a much-loved son, father and friend after his life was cut short in the devastating A66 collision that killed seven people, including two police officers.

Cahill, 23, was among five young men travelling in a Volkswagen Passat that collided head-on with a Cleveland Police vehicle on the A66 near Middlesbrough in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The crash also claimed the lives of police officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who were inside the marked police vehicle at the time of the impact.

The tragedy has left families on both sides of the collision mourning, while investigators continue examining the events that led to the fatal crash.

“A son, a father and a friend”

Relatives of Michael Cahill have described the young man as someone who was deeply loved by those closest to him.

His family said his death had created a loss that was impossible to put into words, highlighting his role as a father and the impact he had on people around him.

Tributes shared online showed photographs of Cahill smiling with friends and family, as loved ones remembered his personality and the memories they shared with him.

He was one of five people inside the Volkswagen Passat who died instantly when the vehicle collided with the police car.

The other occupants were named as:

  • Jakub Matusiak, 23
  • Makai Saddington, 18
  • Theo Rae, 17
  • Cole Robert Worthy, 17

All seven victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fatal collision followed police pursuit

The crash happened at around 3:39am on August 22 near South Bank, Middlesbrough.

According to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), officers had begun pursuing the Volkswagen after it was identified as a suspicious vehicle believed to have been using cloned registration plates.

The pursuit lasted less than seven minutes before the car travelled onto the A66 in the wrong direction.

Police then abandoned the pursuit because of the danger involved.

Around 10 seconds later, the Volkswagen collided with a separate marked police vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction and assisting with the search.

The police vehicle was not the same vehicle involved in the original chase.

Officers remembered as dedicated public servants

The deaths of PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough caused widespread shock among colleagues, friends and residents.

PC Blades, a father of two, had recently become involved with local youth football coaching and was remembered as someone who wanted to support young people in his community.

PC Clough, 38, was also described by relatives as a devoted family man who was proud of his role serving the public.

Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller said the force had lost two brave officers who “did not return home” after carrying out their duties.

She urged people not to speculate while investigations continued and asked the public to respect the privacy of all affected families.

Questions remain over events before crash

Investigators are still working to establish exactly what happened in the moments before the collision.

The IOPC has collected evidence including police logs, witness accounts and vehicle footage as part of its investigation.

The watchdog is examining the police response, the pursuit decision-making process and the circumstances that led to the Volkswagen travelling the wrong way on the dual carriageway.

Authorities have also been investigating possible links between the vehicle and wider criminal activity.

Several arrests have been made as part of the broader inquiry, with police examining allegations involving organised crime.

Community reacts with grief and controversy

The aftermath of the crash has been marked by both mourning and controversy.

Many residents gathered to pay respects to those who died, while tributes appeared near the crash site.

However, a later memorial gathering for Michael Cahill attracted criticism after vehicles were reportedly set on fire and dangerous driving was filmed at the event.

Police have continued urging people not to glorify reckless behaviour and have warned against actions that could increase tensions in the community.

The incident has also intensified discussions about youth crime, social media and the influence of online videos showing dangerous driving.

A region facing a difficult period

The A66 tragedy occurred during an already challenging period for communities around Middlesbrough and Teesside.

Following the crash, additional police resources were deployed to the area as officers investigated a number of serious incidents believed to be connected to wider criminal disputes.

Residents have expressed concern about violence in the area, while community leaders have called for calm and cooperation with police investigations.

Remembering those lost

For the families of those who died, the focus remains on remembering the individuals behind the headlines.

Michael Cahill’s relatives have asked people to remember him not only because of the circumstances surrounding his death, but because of the person he was to those who loved him.

The same message has been echoed by the families of the two officers, who have spoken about their dedication, kindness and commitment to helping others.

The A66 crash has left seven families grieving and a community searching for answers.

As investigations continue, those who knew the victims are left with memories of lives that ended far too soon.

“Behind every name is a family, a group of friends and a story,” one local resident said. “The tragedy is that so many lives have been changed forever in just a few seconds.
