BACK IN THE SUCCESSION RACE — BUT HARRY AND MEGHAN JUST  WANT TO EVADE THE MOMENT ANYONE BRINGS UP THIS ONE PROBLEM…Their two children will study in the UK, Meghan continues to run As Ever, Harry has the Invictus Games Birmingham ahead, while their homes in California and Portugal remain intact. In other words, they can return to their homeland without fully giving up the life they have built across the Atlantic—a convenient arrangement that feels like a version we’ve heard somewhere before. Unfortunately, the Palace still seems to remember very clearly what was decided back in 2020. And the exact detail Harry and Meghan would likely least want to revisit in their blueprint for a new empire in the UK could turn this fresh plan into an awkwardly familiar dilemm

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported return to Britain is being framed as a homecoming, but the more important question is what kind of life can actually exist for them once they are back.

The Princess of Wales, the Prince of Wales and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex walk to meet members of the public at Windsor Castle following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022

According to a Daily Mail report, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are preparing to establish a new base in Britain while remaining private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have reportedly been enrolled in British schools, while the couple will retain their properties in California and Portugal. Meghan is also expected to continue running her lifestyle brand, As Ever.

On the surface, this looks like a major reversal after six years in North America.

But it is not a return to the arrangement Harry and Meghan originally wanted.

The terms established after Megxit remain unchanged. They will not be allowed to become working royals again on a “half-in, half-out” basis, meaning they cannot simultaneously operate commercially while selectively performing official duties for the monarchy.

That distinction could become one of the most important parts of their new British life.

The Sussexes will be physically closer to the institution they left, but they will still remain outside its formal structure.

And that creates an unusual situation: Harry may now be geographically closer to his family than he has been in years while remaining institutionally separate from them.

The person most affected by that contradiction may be Prince William.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt suggested that the return could have a dramatic impact on the brothers’ relationship.

“The surprise return of Harry and Meghan is likely to have left William apoplectic.”

Hunt also argued that Harry’s presence in Britain may make it increasingly difficult for William to continue avoiding reconciliation.

That does not mean reconciliation will happen.

The history between the brothers remains extremely complicated.

Harry has publicly made a series of allegations about William, Catherine, King Charles and Queen Camilla since leaving Britain in 2020. In Spare, Harry alleged that William physically attacked him during an argument about Meghan. He also claimed William and Catherine encouraged him to wear a Nazi costume to a party in 2005.

Harry and Meghan’s Netflix series further accused Kensington Palace of protecting William, while Meghan previously told Oprah Winfrey that Catherine had made her cry before the Sussex wedding.

Harry also described tensions involving Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress and Meghan’s “baby brain” remark to Catherine.

Those episodes matter because Harry is not simply returning to a country where his brother happens to live.

He is returning to the same royal environment where those unresolved accusations still exist.

William is also believed to be particularly protective of Catherine, meaning criticism directed at her may be more difficult for him to overlook than criticism directed at himself.

This is why Harry’s renewed proximity to King Charles could potentially complicate the royal family rather than automatically repair it.

Charles is reportedly pleased that the move could allow him to spend more time with Harry, Meghan and his grandchildren.

Yet the King was also reportedly surprised by the decision.

Harry had met Charles around six weeks earlier, but the proposed return was apparently not discussed. Charles was said to have learned of the plan only shortly before it became public.

That secrecy has raised questions about how much trust has actually been rebuilt.

Jennie Bond highlighted the unusual nature of the situation, imagining the King wondering why such an important decision had not been mentioned during their recent conversation.

At the same time, Bond has cautioned against directing excessive hostility toward Meghan.

She suggested Meghan may be “taking one for the team” by returning to Britain, particularly because living in the UK may not necessarily represent her personal preference.

That point is important.

Meghan previously described experiencing suicidal thoughts while living in Britain as a working royal. Her return therefore carries a different emotional context from Harry’s.

Harry is returning to the country where he grew up.

Meghan is returning to the environment she once described as deeply damaging.

Beyond the family conflict, there is also a public-relations problem.

Recent polling cited in the report showed just 22 percent of Britons viewing Meghan positively, compared with 65 percent negatively. Harry’s figures were stronger but still poor, with 33 percent viewing him positively and 58 percent negatively.

PR expert Mark Borkowski therefore believes the Sussexes will need to move carefully.

He said they may have to eat “large slices of humble pie” if they want to rebuild their position in Britain.

The challenge is not simply improving popularity.

It is defining what Harry and Meghan now represent.

Their years in America were partly built around the idea that they could establish an identity independent of the monarchy. Yet their royal connection continues to generate the greatest attention around them.

That tension becomes even more visible if they live in Britain.

Meghan is expected to continue running As Ever. Harry will likely continue his work connected to veterans and the Invictus Games, with Birmingham scheduled to host the Games in July 2027.

But the closer they are to the Royal Family, the greater the risk that critics accuse them of benefiting commercially from royal proximity while remaining outside royal responsibilities.

That could revive the very “half-in, half-out” argument that was rejected in 2020.

Security adds another complication.

Harry previously argued that he could not safely bring his family to Britain under the existing protection arrangements.

Now, he appears willing to return.

A non-royal residence may require significant additional security measures, potentially including extensive surveillance, technical protection and even a safe room. Questions over who pays for that protection are therefore unlikely to disappear.

There are also financial considerations surrounding the timing of the move. Tax expert Nimesh Shah noted that Harry and Meghan have completed six full tax years outside Britain, which may have implications for temporary non-residence and capital gains rules.

But even that detail may be secondary to the larger issue.

The Sussexes are not simply moving house.

They are returning to a country where their family relationships, commercial identities and royal status remain unresolved.

And the most difficult part may not be persuading the British public to accept them again.

It may be discovering whether William believes reconciliation is possible without first requiring Harry to confront everything that happened before he left.
