Six years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties and built a new life in America, another unexpected possibility is being discussed: could the Sussexes gradually find their way back toward Britain?

The idea has reportedly become significant enough that friends are calling it a “plan to reverse Megxit.”

But a closer look suggests something more complicated than Harry and Meghan simply packing their belongings and moving home. What appears to be emerging instead is the possibility of a middle ground—one that reconnects Harry and his children with Britain while preserving much of the independent life the Sussexes created after leaving royal duties.

According to an article by Emily Andrews published by Woman & Home, Harry and Meghan have begun feeling somewhat unwelcome in the United States, while reconnecting with Harry’s English roots has become a “priority” for the couple and their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five.

Their holiday home in Portugal could potentially become a staging point for spending more time closer to Britain.

Crucially, however, the reported plan does not involve an imminent or permanent move back to the U.K.

Harry’s Heart May Never Have Completely Left England

One friend offered perhaps the clearest explanation of what may be driving the shift.

“England is where Harry’s heart has always lain,” the source said.

According to the friend, Harry and Meghan originally moved to America partly to seek their fortune and capitalize to some degree on his fame and royal status.

And their American experiment did produce major opportunities.

“A $100 million Netflix deal is not nothing,” the friend acknowledged.

But the source added that “that American dream is cooling,” while Meghan may also increasingly feel like an outsider.

The end or evolution of major relationships with Spotify and Netflix is presented as part of the backdrop. The article also points to Meghan’s reportedly fading popularity among some previous supporters, including Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

Against that environment, Britain may suddenly look different to Harry than it did when he left.

Another source, described as less sympathetic toward the Sussexes, said, “I don’t think Harry has ever wanted to be estranged from his family.”

According to that source, Harry may once have been willing to choose American life with Meghan without fully confronting what separation from his family would mean.

“Now things are different, and the veil is lifting,” the source claimed.

That should not be interpreted as evidence that Harry and Meghan are separating. The article explicitly rejects that conclusion. Instead, it raises the possibility that Harry may no longer automatically follow every direction Meghan wants to pursue.

Highgrove Changed the Equation

The strongest evidence that a different chapter may be possible came not from Hollywood or Montecito, but from Highgrove House.

Harry, Meghan and their children recently met King Charles and Queen Camilla there. For Charles, it meant spending time with Archie and Lilibet for the first time in four years.

But far more was hanging over that meeting.

The family was confronting the legacy of years of public conflict involving the Oprah Winfrey interview, Harry’s memoir “Spare,” the Netflix series “Harry & Meghan,” Harry’s legal battles with the Home Office and other controversies.

That is why the meeting has been characterized as “a major test for the Sussexes.”

And the test appears to revolve around one word: privacy.

There has been no briefing from either Buckingham Palace or the Sussex camp about what was discussed over tea. No photographs have emerged.

That silence appears significant.

The article argues that Charles expressly wanted the encounter to happen privately and remain that way.

“If anything leaks, the fragile trust will be rocked once again.”

The historical context makes that condition even more important. When Harry and Meghan introduced Lilibet to the late Queen Elizabeth II during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022, they reportedly asked whether they could bring a trusted photographer. The request was denied.

This time, there were no photographs.

If the Sussexes are genuinely attempting to restore their place within the wider family, keeping Highgrove private may therefore be their first major demonstration that a new relationship with the palace is possible.

The Next Test Could Come Very Soon

Harry is expected back in Britain next month for another charity event, and another father-son meeting with Charles is anticipated.

Then comes an even larger opportunity: the Invictus Games in Birmingham next summer.

The Sussexes reportedly want Archie and Lilibet involved in some public engagements connected with the Games, while Charles will also be invited.

Meghan reportedly felt “sadness” over missing Invictus events last month and “humiliated” when the controversy surrounding their security arrangements played out publicly.

The article also argues that Meghan’s eventual visit with the children challenged Harry’s repeated claim that bringing his family to Britain without the armed Metropolitan Police protection he wants was too dangerous.

That security dispute nevertheless remains part of the complicated landscape surrounding any expanded Sussex presence in Britain.

A Return Without Really Returning

Perhaps the biggest question is whether Harry actually wants to become a working royal again.

He currently is not one.

And the emerging picture does not necessarily suggest he wants to restore the old arrangement.

Andrews offers a different interpretation: Harry may want “the best bits of being royal”—including popularity, public affection and the opportunity to help people—without taking back the burdensome duties that accompany being a full-time working member of the monarchy.

That may ultimately explain what “reverse Megxit” really means.

Not reversing 2020 completely.

Not abandoning America tomorrow.

And not necessarily returning to palace duty.

Instead, Harry and Meghan may be searching for a new position somewhere between Montecito and the monarchy, potentially using Portugal as a bridge while rebuilding connections in Britain.

But before any of that becomes possible, there is a much smaller test underway.

The doors of Highgrove have finally opened again.

Whether they remain open may depend on whether Harry and Meghan can prove that what happened behind them stays there.
