So much for King Charles III’s reported hope that Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom could provide an opportunity for his feuding sons to reconcile.

Prince William is not likely to be happy with a new report that his younger brother is “just as angry” as when he and Meghan Markle left the U.K. six years ago on their “freedom flight,” accusing the royal family of being hostile to his American wife. Friends have told the Daily Mail’s editor at large Charlotte Griffiths that Harry is “spitting blood” at certain members of the royal family and still “expects an apology” for how he and his wife were treated.

“Friends who have spoken to him since he returned to the U.K. were surprised to discover that the record has not changed one bit since 2020 and Megxit,” a source told Griffiths. “It’s shocking and quite sad.”

These friends had expected that Harry — who arrived back in the U.K. last week with Meghan and their two children, Archie and Lilibet — would be full of “contrition and humility,” given reports that the couple’s return was necessitated by their failure to launch themselves as Hollywood media moguls, as well as Harry’s unhappiness in California because he no longer has a role as a professional prince.

“Instead, there will be no imminent mea culpa from Harry by the sounds of things,” the source told Griffiths. “Far from it, in fact. He is still in that Oprah mindset.” The source is referring to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s infamous 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, when they both accused royal family members of saying racist things and of ignoring Meghan’s need for mental health help.

Meanwhile, it also sounds like Harry is mired in the idea that he, not his brother, should be the one, true representative of the legacy of their late mother, Princess Diana. “He certainly won’t be issuing a public apology for his actions and he’s whipped himself up all over again and Diana’s legacy is a factor in this,” the source told Griffiths.

Like his mother, Harry also is complaining about the “men in grey suits” in the royal institution and believes that they, not his own actions, have been undermining his efforts to reconcile with his father and other royal family members.

With Meghan, Harry also seems eager to stake his claim to leading memorials for his mother, as the 30th anniversary of her death comes next August.

Last month, following a visit to the U.K., Meghan publicized the Sussex family visit to Diana’s grave at her family’s ancestral home, Althorp House. The former TV actor-turned aspiring lifestyle influencer shared photos on social media of Archie and Lilibet carrying bunches of flowers through the grounds of Althorp House.

The Prince of Wales was reportedly “enraged” that Meghan shared public photos from near his mother’s grave, and he was “apoplectic” over the Sussexes’ sudden announcement that they were moving back to the U.K. without giving their father much notice, according to the Daily Mail’s royal expert Sarah Vine. To William, the way the couple grabbed headlines was typical of the way they like to stir up drama, as Vine also explained.

Now, with Harry and Meghan back in the U.K., it looks like he — and his wife, too, possibly —  will try to grab some more headlines at a high-profile event honoring Diana, according to Griffiths.

Meghan could possibly join Harry at the glitzy Sept. 18 fundraiser and ceremony for The Diana Award, Griffiths reported. “Attending the event would mark a symbolic moment for Meghan by linking her to the legacy of Harry’s mother,” Griffiths said.

It’s been confirmed that Harry will attend the dinner and awards ceremony, and Meghan is considering joining him.

The Diana Award celebrates young people around the world who start programs or champion causes that make a differences in the lives of others. It’s also one of the last formal charitable links between Harry and William.

William has previously headlined Diana Award events and he made an appearance on behalf of the organization early this summer, Griffiths said.

“Harry is expected to take the lead at this event,” a source told Griffiths. “The brothers tend to take it in turns.” Their feud keeps them from being anywhere near each other — “especially if Meghan is there,” the source said.

Indeed, Meghan’s appearance at The Diana Award dinner would ratchet up tensions between the brothers, another source told Griffiths. “Instead of returning to Britain solely as Harry’s wife and the mother of his children, she would be appearing alongside him at an event tied directly to the memory of Diana,” the source said.

As for Harry feeling no remorse for critical things he’s said about his family to Oprah Winfrey or in his 2023 memoir, “Spare,” he previously said he stands by what he’s revealed. In an interview with The Guardian nearly a year ago, Harry said, “my conscience is clear.”

“I know that (speaking out) annoys some people, and it goes against the narrative,” Harry said. He insisted that “Spare” was an effort to correct “stories already out there” about him and his wife.

“One point of view had been put out, and it needed to be corrected,” Harry told The Guardian. “I don’t believe that I aired my dirty laundry in public. It was a difficult message, but I did it in the best way possible.”
