HARRY WANTS CHARLES TO APPEAR AT INVICTUS — BUT THE STRATEGY REPORTEDLY BEING USED COULD BACKFIRE. Richard Eden suspects that news of the invitation was leaked to the press to exert “public pressure” on King Charles. However, instead of making it easier for the King to agree, the controversy has now led to an even more extreme call: that Harry himself should step down from Invictus — in a way no one saw coming…

On the latest Palace Confidential, Richard Eden and Richard Kay examine claims Prince Harry's camp is using 'public pressure' to coax King Charles into appearing at the Invictus Games

Prince Harry reportedly wants King Charles at the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. On paper, it could be an extraordinary moment: a father supporting his son’s signature project, a monarch showing solidarity with the military community, and perhaps even a visible sign that years of royal tension are beginning to ease.

Yet almost eleven months before the Games begin, the possibility of Charles attending has already become entangled in another controversy.

The question is no longer simply whether the King will go.

Diary editor Eden suggested the invitation had been planted by Harry's PR team, in the hope it would push the monarch into making an appearance

It is whether Harry’s camp is attempting to make it harder for him to say no.

According to a Daily Mail report examining a discussion on Palace Confidential, royal commentators Richard Eden and Richard Kay have questioned why details of Harry’s reported invitation to his father have surfaced so far in advance. Both raised the possibility that the publicity could be intended to create pressure on Charles.

Eden went furthest, suggesting Harry’s PR team may have planted the invitation story in the press in hopes of encouraging a royal appearance.

He pointed to comments previously made by Mail on Sunday Editor-at-Large Charlotte Griffiths, who said last year that Sussex advisers had supplied her with favourable stories.

Eden argued the controversy already surrounding an event still eleven months away was reason enough for Harry to consider stepping away from the Games

That does not establish that Harry or his representatives leaked this particular invitation. The claim remains the commentators’ interpretation rather than a confirmed account of what happened behind the scenes.

Nevertheless, Eden sees a familiar pattern.

“Pressure is always put on the King and Queen,” he said.

He compared the current situation with the build-up to Harry and Meghan’s recent visit to Britain, when weeks of speculation surrounded their security arrangements and whether they would bring their children.

“It all seems like public pressure,” Eden argued, adding that this was “really not the way the royal family has traditionally operated.”

In his view, an invitation of this importance should be quietly handled behind palace doors.

Harry founded the Games in 2014 as a working royal, with the Royal Foundation, which he then shared with William and Catherine

“You would expect an invitation like this to go out behind the scenes,” he said, “and that it all would be done in private.”

Instead, the question of Charles attending an event scheduled for July 2027 is already being debated publicly.

For Eden, that risks creating a much larger problem.

“You do not want to see the Invictus Games turned into some sort of personal football,” he warned.

That concern ultimately led him to make the most dramatic argument of the discussion: perhaps Harry himself should leave.

“Personally, I would like to see Harry step down from it, to distance himself from Invictus,” Eden said.

He argued that removing Harry from the equation would eliminate the “controversial element” and allow the Games to prosper.

It is a striking suggestion considering Harry’s history with Invictus.

He founded the Games in 2014 while still a working royal. The Royal Foundation, which he then shared with William and Catherine, worked alongside the Ministry of Defence to deliver the event.

Invictus has since become one of the achievements most closely associated with Harry.

The Birmingham Games will run from July 10 to July 17, 2027, marking the first time the competition has returned to Britain since its London debut.

That homecoming could make Charles’s presence particularly significant.

Yet veteran royal correspondent Richard Kay also questioned why the possibility is being discussed so early.

He called the timing “unusual,” noting that royal diaries are generally arranged in six-month intervals.

Kay raised another intriguing possibility.

Harry may believe some of the aides surrounding his father are unsympathetic to him. Publicizing Charles’s invitation could therefore offer a way of going around the people controlling the King’s schedule and appealing more directly.

“It does feel like Harry is trying to bounce his father into something ahead of time,” Kay said.

He added that Harry could see “enemies among Charles’s staff.”

If that is the strategy, however, Kay described it as feeling “slightly desperate.”

And there is an irony at the center of his argument.

Charles may not require much persuading in the first place.

“I am certain the King will want to go along anyway to support it,” Kay said.

The reason extends beyond Harry.

The Royal Family has traditionally placed enormous importance on demonstrating support for the Armed Forces. Invictus, with its military identity and mission, naturally fits within that tradition.

Kay therefore acknowledges the significance of Harry’s achievement.

“Invictus is a feather in Harry’s cap, without a doubt,” he said.

His concern begins only if the Games become a vehicle for Harry’s personal image.

“If it is being used just to promote himself,” Kay added, “that would grate a bit.”

That distinction lies at the heart of the controversy.

Invictus was created by Harry, and his identity has always been deeply connected to it. Separating the founder from the institution is therefore not nearly as simple as Eden’s suggestion might imply.

At the same time, the more attention shifts toward Harry’s relationship with Charles, the easier it becomes for the athletes and purpose of Invictus to be pushed behind another royal drama.

Amanda Platell, whose earlier Mail column helped prompt the Palace Confidential discussion, had already argued that Charles should reject Harry’s request after details of the invitation reached the press.

Eden worries that accepting under such circumstances could appear as though the King had given in to pressure.

But Kay’s interpretation presents an even more complicated scenario.

If Charles already wanted to attend because of Invictus’s military significance, then public pressure — assuming there actually was an intentional strategy — might have created a controversy around a decision that did not need one.

That would be the ultimate irony.

Harry wants his father beside him at one of the most important events associated with his post-royal identity. Yet the speculation over how he is trying to achieve that goal has now prompted calls for Harry himself to step away from the very institution he created.

There is currently no confirmation that Harry’s team deliberately planted the invitation story, nor evidence in the report that Invictus organizers want him to resign.

For now, those are arguments being made by royal commentators.

But Birmingham is still eleven months away, and the debate has already become intensely personal.

The challenge for Harry may therefore be larger than persuading Charles to attend.

It may be ensuring that when Invictus finally returns to Britain, the story is about the Games — rather than whether the King was pressured into standing beside his son.
