More than six years after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped away from royal duties, the debate surrounding their decision remains as intense as ever. Their departure changed the public image of Britain’s royal family, reshaped relationships inside the institution, and sparked endless discussions over who should bear responsibility for the fallout.
According to a recent report by Fox News Digital, that debate has taken on fresh significance as Meghan celebrated her 45th birthday. Rather than focusing solely on criticism of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, several royal commentators offered sharply different explanations for why the relationship between the couple and the monarchy ultimately collapsed.
One of the strongest observations came from royal author Catherine Mayer, whose assessment avoids placing all the blame on either side. She acknowledged that Harry and Meghan’s move to the United States created lasting consequences, saying, “the rupture… has done very serious damage to the monarchy.” Yet she immediately added an important distinction—recognizing the damage does not mean she believes the couple alone caused it.
Instead, Mayer described the entire situation as something “very painful for everybody and for the institution.” In her view, the declining popularity of the monarchy cannot be explained by a single event or a single family dispute. She pointed out that recent polling suggests public support has weakened over time, while also noting that Prince Andrew’s scandals have significantly contributed to that decline.
Even so, Harry and Meghan represented something the modern monarchy has struggled to replace.

Before leaving royal life in 2020, they attracted younger audiences in ways few other working royals managed to achieve. Their global popularity, media presence, and modern image created a bridge between the centuries-old institution and younger generations. Mayer believes that connection largely disappeared after they relocated to California.
She suggested that Prince William and Princess Catherine remain the only senior royals with similar long-term potential, but their approach is considerably more traditional. As a result, the monarchy now faces a difficult challenge: maintaining relevance among younger audiences without two of its most recognizable figures.
The consequences of the couple’s departure extended far beyond public opinion.
After stepping away from royal duties, Harry and Meghan openly discussed their experiences through television interviews, documentaries, and Harry’s memoir Spare. Each project revealed new grievances about life inside the institution and deepened the distance between Harry and the rest of his family.
Recent events, however, have hinted that complete reconciliation may not be impossible.
During Harry’s latest visit to Britain, Meghan had reportedly intended to accompany him for several engagements but ultimately stayed away because of continuing security concerns involving herself and their children. Although she avoided public appearances, she and Harry privately met King Charles and Queen Camilla on July 10—the first time Meghan had returned to England since 2022.

To some observers, that private reunion represented a meaningful step toward rebuilding damaged relationships. Others, however, believe the meeting exposed new tensions rather than resolving old ones.
