SELL THE HOUSE AND SCRAP THE MEDIA DEALS—HARRY AND MEGHAN MIGHT JUST BE ABLE TO FOOT THEIR UK BILLS. Prince Harry and Meghan are kicking off a new chapter in the UK as if the last six years never even happened. The kids will go to school in England, and their business ventures will keep humming along. A fairytale ending to their quest for freedom and privacy seems well within reach—except for the fact that they still can’t pay their own security bill. Harry previously lamented that he might not be able to show his children his homeland because of fears over potential attacks. But then, seemingly overnight, he decided to have his children attend school in Britain, while apparently setting aside the security fears he had repeatedly raised before. And this dizzying change of heart may have everything to do with one name — the person who could ultimately be left picking up Prince Harry’s security bill.

Prince Harry spent years arguing that Britain could not provide the level of security he believed his family needed. Now, only months after losing a legal battle over taxpayer-funded police protection, he is preparing to bring Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet back to live in the UK.

That reversal makes the Sussexes’ return more than a story about home, family or reconciliation. It creates an immediate practical question: what changed?

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle (pictured in April) are moving back to the United Kingdom later this month

According to a Daily Mail report, Harry and Meghan are expected to return to Britain for an extended stay while remaining private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family. Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, are believed to have already been enrolled at a British school. The family will live in a non-royal residence whose location has not been disclosed.

It comes just three months after Harry (pictured outside the Royal Courts of Justice) lost a battle for taxpayer-funded armed police bodyguards during visits to the UK

They are not, however, abandoning America. Harry and Meghan intend to continue their business ventures and retain their £11 million Montecito home. It is also not yet clear whether their British move will eventually become permanent.

But the unanswered security issue makes this arrangement particularly intriguing.

Only around three months before the reported move, Harry lost his challenge concerning the security arrangements applied to him in Britain.

After the Sussexes stopped being working royals in 2020, the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures, known as Ravec, determined that Harry should receive a different level of protection when visiting Britain.

Questions have now surfaced over who will fund the Sussexes' (pictured in 2022) security following their one-way trip across the Atlantic

Harry challenged that system.

His barrister argued that the dangers facing the Duke had not disappeared simply because he stopped being a frontline royal. Harry’s military service, the argument continued, had also created particular risks.

Master of the Rolls Sir Geoffrey Vos acknowledged that Harry’s arguments were “powerful and moving,” but ruled that his sense of grievance did not amount to a successful legal argument.

The result was significant: taxpayer-funded armed police bodyguards would not simply be reinstated for Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet.

Harry’s reaction at the time made his position appear unmistakable.

Speaking about his children, he said:

“I think it’s really quite sad that I won’t be able to show my children my homeland.”

Harry's relationship with his brother Prince William has been strained ever since he quit life as a working royal in 2020 (Kate, Will, Harry and Meghan are pictured in 2022)

Yet only a few months later, the children are apparently not merely visiting Harry’s homeland. They are preparing to attend school there.

That creates the central contradiction surrounding this return.

There has been no confirmation that Harry has received new security assurances from the Home Office. It is equally unclear whether additional costs created by the Sussexes living in Britain could eventually fall on taxpayers.

Until that is explained, the obvious question remains whether Harry’s assessment of the danger changed, whether the security arrangements changed, or whether the Sussexes have found another solution.

Their July visit makes the situation even more interesting.

Two months after the Court of Appeal ruling, Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet travelled to Britain and secretly visited King Charles and Queen Camilla at Highgrove. It was reportedly Charles’s first meeting with the children in four years.

It is, however, thought that King Charles 'welcomes' news of his son's return to Britain (the pair are pictured together in 2022)

Harry is understood to want to repair his relationship with his father and hopes Charles will attend the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July 2027.

Charles is now said to “welcome” his son’s return.

There is, however, an awkward detail.

Despite meeting the King and Queen at Highgrove, Harry and Meghan apparently did not tell them that they were preparing to move their family back to Britain. Charles therefore appears to have been blindsided by the announcement.

Harry had already been scheduled to return for the WellChild Awards and was expected to stay in a room at Buckingham Palace, but establishing a home in Britain with two school-age children is obviously a considerably larger decision.

Then there is Prince William.

If Harry’s relationship with Charles appears capable of moving toward reconciliation, his relationship with his brother remains frozen.

Harry and William are not believed to have spoken for years. William and Catherine were reportedly deeply hurt by allegations contained in Harry’s memoir, Spare.

Whether Harry intends to confront that estrangement after moving back remains unknown.

This creates an unusual royal geography: Harry could soon be living in Britain again, his children attending British school, his relationship with Charles improving and his Invictus work bringing him greater visibility — while still having virtually no relationship with the future king.

Meghan’s return carries another layer of historical baggage.

The article revisits allegations that Palace employees once nicknamed her “Duchess Difficult” and accused her of bullying staff and, on occasions, making employees cry.

Veteran royal correspondent Valentine Low, who first reported bullying allegations in 2021, claimed that some former employees remained psychologically affected even after the Sussexes moved thousands of miles away.

He said:

“They viewed her capacity for revenge as infinite.”

Those allegations remain allegations, and Meghan has vehemently denied them, describing them as part of an orchestrated smear campaign.

Nevertheless, their resurfacing illustrates something important about the Sussexes’ return: moving back geographically does not erase the controversies they left behind.

And security may be the clearest example.

Harry once presented protection as a fundamental obstacle to bringing his family home. He fought the issue through the courts, lost, and publicly lamented that his children might therefore be unable to experience his homeland.

Now Archie and Lilibet are reportedly preparing their school bags.

Perhaps there is an explanation that has not yet become public. Perhaps circumstances have changed. Perhaps the Sussexes have accepted a security arrangement they previously considered inadequate.

But until that missing piece emerges, their return carries an unavoidable irony.

The biggest mystery is no longer whether Harry can bring his family back to Britain.

He apparently can.

The mystery is what happened between losing the battle he considered essential and deciding, only months later, that Britain was safe enough to call home again.
