The Great Food Truck Race is officially back, and Season 18 is already making history with the most dramatic rule change the Food Network competition has ever introduced. Premiering on Sunday, July 26, 2026, on Food Network (with streaming available afterward on HBO Max and discovery+), the new season abandons one of the franchise’s longest-running traditions in favor of a format that gives struggling teams a chance to fight for survival.

A Historic Theme: Sweet vs. Savory
For the first time ever, the competition is divided into two rival camps.
Four savory food trucks will battle directly against four dessert trucks in a season-long showdown to determine which style of street food reigns supreme.
The race begins in the lively streets of Broadway in Nashville, Tennessee, winds through the scenic Great Smoky Mountains, and concludes with the championship finale in Louisville, Kentucky, where one team will claim the $50,000 grand prize.

Meet the Eight Food Trucks
Savory Division
- DeadProof Pizza Co. (Derry, New Hampshire)
- Jollof Bowl (Baltimore, Maryland)
- Stuph’d Beignets & Burgers (New Orleans, Louisiana)
- Waffadilla (Hampshire, Illinois)
Sweet Division
- Bug & Bear’s Cannoli (Los Angeles, California)
- Cason Funnel Cakes (Richmond, Virginia)
- Grounds Donut House (Bronx, New York)
- Hele Rolls (Kapolei, Hawaii)
The contrasting menus promise an entirely new strategic battle, as dessert specialists and savory chefs compete under the same sales challenges throughout the race.
The Biggest Twist: Elimination Is No Longer Based on Sales Alone
The most significant change comes in the elimination format.
In previous seasons, the lowest-selling food truck each week was immediately eliminated, meaning one poor business day could instantly end a team’s journey.

That rule is officially gone.
Instead, Season 18 introduces the Taste Redemption Battle, a brand-new head-to-head cook-off that completely changes how teams stay alive.
Here’s how it works:
- The two lowest-earning teams each week are placed in danger.
- Rather than being eliminated immediately, they face each other in a head-to-head cooking battle.
- A judging panel evaluates the dishes based on taste and execution.
- Only the losing team in the Taste Redemption Battle is eliminated.
Why This Changes Everything
The new format means that business performance is no longer the only factor determining survival.

A team may struggle with sales because of weather, location, or customer trafficβbut if they can produce the better dish when it matters most, they still have a chance to continue racing.
Likewise, teams can no longer rely solely on marketing or salesmanship. Every truck must consistently deliver high-quality food because their culinary skills could ultimately determine whether they stay in the competition.
The twist is expected to make the season far more unpredictable, rewarding both strong business strategy and exceptional cooking ability.
With a historic Sweet vs. Savory theme, eight unique food trucks, an exciting cross-country route, and the introduction of the Taste Redemption Battle, The Great Food Truck Race is entering a completely new eraβone where survival depends not only on what you sell, but also on what you serve when everything is on the line.
