MASTERCHEF FINAL 1 IS TENSE AND NAIL-BITING — AFTER JUST THE APPETIZER, ONE CONTENDER HAS ALREADY STARTED TO “PULL AHEAD”! Final 1 of MasterChef has officially entered the battle with Jake, Peter, and Heidi. It’s not simply about cooking a dish — all three must incorporate their hometown and personal journey into every plate, creating a showdown between completely different culinary backgrounds. Three contestants, three appetizers, and three personal stories have made the finale especially intense. Although no one has been eliminated yet, the first course already seems to have revealed some differences in form between the three chefs. And what has particularly caught viewers’ attention is one name currently holding the advantage after the appetizer round — a contestant whose strong opening performance has made them a serious contender for the championship.

The final battle for the $250,000 MasterChef title has officially begun, and MasterChef Season 16 wasted no time turning its first finale episode into a pressure cooker. On September 9, Jake Kelley, Heidi Muston and Peter Egede entered the kitchen for the first part of the two-night finale, knowing that there would be no Immunity Pin, no second chance and no safety net left. Their only weapon was a three-course menu designed to tell the story of where they came from and how far they had come.

MasterChef Season 16 Episode 17 recap: Finale Part 1

The opening challenge immediately forced all three finalists to put their identities on the plate. Peter Egede, representing his Nigerian heritage, started with steamed red snapper served with pepper soup broth, red pepper glaze and yam dumplings. Technically, the dish showed exactly why Peter had made it this far. The fish was handled beautifully, while the combination of familiar Nigerian flavors and a more refined presentation impressed Tiffany and Joe. But Gordon Ramsay quickly found the weakness that could become costly in a finale: the broth was simply too salty. It was a relatively small seasoning mistake, but at this stage of the competition, even a minor imbalance can suddenly feel enormous.

Then came Heidi Muston, and her appetizer immediately became one of the night’s most debated plates. Heidi presented chili-marinated black cod with mango salsa, fennel salad and peri-peri cream sauce. The fish itself was cooked well and the plate looked colorful and polished, but the judges questioned whether Heidi had tried to do too much. Gordon felt there was simply too much salad and slaw surrounding the fish, preventing the centerpiece of the dish from commanding enough attention. Tiffany also wanted to see more of the peri-peri cream sauce to bring the components together, while Joe questioned whether the dish had enough ambition for a finale appetizer.

For Heidi, the criticism was particularly significant because she had been one of the most consistent contestants throughout the season. She had avoided the danger zone and arrived at the finale with a reputation for reliability. Suddenly, however, the judges were telling her that reliability alone might not be enough to win $250,000. Her dish had technique, but the question was whether it had the impact required on the biggest night of the competition.

And then Jake Kelley stepped up.

Jake’s appetizer, appropriately titled “Kraken,” delivered ruby prawn and octopus in a taco with avocado crema and aguachile rojo. It was bold, modern and immediately recognizable as Jake’s style. Gordon was particularly impressed, calling it one of the most memorable tacos he had tasted, while Joe praised Jake for elevating the familiar taco into something closer to modern Mexican cuisine.

There was one criticism: the tortilla was slightly dry. But compared with the seasoning problem on Peter’s plate and the balance and composition concerns surrounding Heidi’s appetizer, Jake appeared to escape with remarkably little damage. More importantly, he seemed to be building momentum at exactly the right moment.

Still, the episode stopped short of declaring Jake the frontrunner.

The judges did not reveal official scores after the appetizer round, meaning there was no definitive leaderboard for the finalists to rely on. Jake may have delivered the most immediately impressive plate, but Peter remained dangerous, while Heidi was still very much alive in the competition. With three courses determining the fate of the finalists, one successful appetizer could not guarantee anything.

That became even clearer when the competition moved into the entrée round. The pressure intensified almost immediately, with Peter encountering trouble while working on his steak, while Jake and Heidi continued pushing toward their main courses. The episode ended before the complete entrée results could be revealed, leaving the three finalists hanging on the edge of what could become a dramatic reversal.

After Finale Part 1, Jake certainly appears to have the strongest momentum. Peter’s technical ability and Nigerian-inspired cooking remain a major threat, while Heidi faces perhaps the biggest challenge after the judges questioned the construction of her opening plate.

But nobody has been eliminated, and nobody has been crowned.

With $250,000 and the MasterChef title still waiting at the end of the road, the first finale episode may have established the early momentum—but it did not settle the race. The answer will come when the three finalists return for Finale Part 2 on September 16, where the remaining dishes will finally determine who walks away as the next MasterChef.
