RECAP: The MasterChef Asia-Pacific regional auditions are heating up more than ever, where the battle for the white apron is fierce. Known for its diverse and unique culinary culture, the competition forces contestants to showcase everything to secure their place in the next round. The only door leading to the true MasterChef arena has already been claimed by these names.

The “Global Gauntlet” round of MasterChef Season 16 continued to heat up as the competition shifted its focus to the Asia-Pacific region in the April 22 episode. With a World Cup-inspired format, contestants must fight for a limited number of white aprons, needing a unanimous yes from judges Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich, and Tiffany Derry.

With only 45 minutes to cook and just five aprons available, the pressure was intense. Each home cook had to present a dish that not only reflected their heritage but also met restaurant-quality standards.

As the oldest contestant of the group, Lawrence shared a story about returning to his culinary roots after decades in a traditional job. He prepared a Kansas City-style BBQ kangaroo with mango sauce, passion-fruit slaw, and yuca fries. While the concept was ambitious, the execution fell short. Tiffany described it as “rustic but rushed,” and Gordon noted the kangaroo was overcooked. Despite decent flavors, the technical flaws led to a quick no from Gordon, sending Lawrence home.

Aishu (33, Boston – representing India)

Aishu brought bold energy, calling herself a “rebel Indian” and even teaching the judges a quick dance before cooking. She presented an orange, cardamom, and olive oil cake with vanilla mascarpone cream and pistachio crumble. Gordon praised its fragrance, Tiffany found it addictive, and Joe described it as a delicious homestyle dessert. Though slightly under-seasoned, it impressed enough for Aishu to earn a white apron.

Foo (53, California – representing Vietnam)

Foo delivered one of the most emotional moments of the episode, cooking in honor of his mother, who inspired him and is now battling dementia. He made Vietnamese egg rolls filled with crab, shrimp, and pork, served with a dashi dipping sauce and herb salad. Joe called it a dish full of “history and culture,” Tiffany praised the texture, and Gordon said it was “impeccably seasoned.” Foo received three yes votes and secured a white apron.

Shompa (Brooklyn – representing Bangladesh)

Coming from a fishing village background, Shompa showcased her roots with a halibut bhuna served with rice and dal. Her dish stood out for its elegance and technical precision. Gordon praised the perfectly cooked fish, Tiffany called it “gorgeous,” and Joe noted its professional execution. She earned a clear white apron.

Tony (Minneapolis – representing South Korea)
Tony shared a personal story about reconnecting with his heritage through food as an adoptee. He prepared miso-marinated ribeye with kimchi fried rice. While the rice was well received, the steak lacked a proper sear and appeared overcooked. Joe criticized the texture, and the technical mistake cost Tony his chance, sending him home.

Iman (Maryland – representing Afghanistan)
Iman brought big personality and a dish inspired by Afghan communal dining: lamb qabuli palau with honey-glazed carrots and chutney. However, the lamb was overcooked and dry. Joe quickly gave a no, and that was enough to eliminate her. Iman was sent home.

Jaime (27, Queens – representing Malaysia)

Jaime combined strong storytelling with excellent execution, inspired by her father and their shared dream of opening a food truck. She cooked wagyu beef satay with peanut sauce and coconut rice. The judges loved it across the board—Tiffany praised the char, Joe gave an immediate yes, and Gordon called it authentic and delicious. Jaime easily secured a white apron.

Fatima (40, Illinois – representing Pakistan)

Fatima hoped to honor her mother’s cooking with lamb chops masala and braised onions. While the flavors were praised, the dish had critical flaws. Gordon questioned the use of honey and pointed out the lamb was undercooked. Joe also disagreed with the ingredient choices. These issues led to her elimination, and Fatima was sent home.

Daniel, 23, Johns Creek, Ga. (China)MASTERCHEF: GLOBAL GAUNTLET: Auditioner. MASTERCHEF: GLOBAL GAUNTLET Auditions Day 2 (Asia-Pacific) airs Wednesday, April 22 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. CR: Geoff George /FOX. ©2026 FOX Media LLC.

Daniel shared that he struggled with his identity as a Chinese American but found a sense of connection through cooking from a young age. He even started a culinary club in college to help others learn basic skills. His tofu and ricotta ravioli with mapo sauce showed creativity and strong execution. Gordon Ramsay praised the dish as “bloody good,” while Joe Bastianich likened the sauce to a Chinese-style bolognese, noting that despite the unconventional use of pasta, the dish worked well.

Final results:
Out of eight contestants, only four advanced: Aishu, Foo, Shompa, Jaime and Daniel all earned white aprons, while the others were eliminated mainly due to technical mistakes—especially improper meat cooking.

This episode made one thing clear: on this stage, a great story isn’t enough. Precision, technique, and execution are what truly determine who moves forward in the race for the MasterChef title and the $250,000 prize.
