Pitmasters Season 1 is heading into its most intense stage yet. Episode 7, “Semifinal Showdown: Whole Hog,” airs on August 24, 2026, putting the three strongest remaining teams through a brutal barbecue challenge that could determine who gets to compete for the $50,000 grand prize.

With only three teams left, there is no room for a major mistake. The semifinal challenge forces each pitmaster to work with an entire hog, testing not only their cooking ability but also their patience, fire management and technical precision.
The main challenge, known as the “Big Burn,” requires the three teams to break down, season and cook a whole hog over an outdoor charcoal pit for 12 straight hours. Unlike a competition focused on a single cut of meat, cooking an entire hog requires the pitmasters to manage different parts of the animal at the same time while maintaining consistent heat throughout the long cook.
The judges will pay particular attention to three key elements: heat control, crispy skin and consistency across the meat.
That means simply cooking the pork until it is tender will not be enough. The contestants must demonstrate complete control of the pit, ensuring that the exterior develops the desired texture without sacrificing the quality of the meat underneath.
A mistake early in the 12-hour cook could become impossible to fix by the time the judges arrive.
Adding another layer of pressure is the “Flash Burn” side challenge. Instead of focusing on the main cuts, the contestants must get creative with two ingredients that are often overlooked: pork fat and offal.
The teams must transform those ingredients into an inventive side dish, with $2,500 on the line for the winner.
The secondary challenge could prove particularly important because it forces the pitmasters to demonstrate versatility. They cannot simply rely on their signature barbecue techniques. They have to find a way to turn unconventional ingredients into something that can stand beside their main dish.
But ultimately, the biggest prize is not the $2,500.
It is the chance to keep competing.
At the end of the semifinal, the judges will select the two best-performing teams to advance to Episode 8, the grand finale. The third team will be eliminated just one step away from the championship.
The stakes could not be higher. The two finalists will compete for the title of the first-ever Pitmasters champion and the coveted $50,000 grand prize.

After seven episodes of intense barbecue competition, the semifinal is therefore more than another cooking challenge. It is a test of endurance, technique and consistency — with a 12-hour whole-hog cook separating the finalists from everyone else.
For the three remaining teams, the message is simple:
Control the fire, master the hog and survive the longest cook of the season — or go home one step before the $50,000 finale.
