A RUTHLESS Italian mafia kingpin’s vast $232million criminal empire derived from drug trafficking and parasitic exploitation has been seized.

Late mob boss Matteo Messina Denaro was captured in 2023 after three decades on the run, sentenced to six life sentences, and died a few months later aged 61. But while the notorious godfather has just passed away, his dark legacy continues to shake the entire world. The Sicilian mafia’s last godfather amassed a mind-boggling $232million fortune through his life of crime, and now authorities are aggressively stripping it away.

The merciless Cosa Nostra boss amassed an enormous fortune from a life dedicated to blood and crime, which he reinvested throughout the world. Among his vast assets, Denaro owned 22 luxury resorts, £8.6million in cold hard cash, and 26lbs of pure, solid gold ingots.

Italian police released dramatic videos showing officers in riot gear smashing down doors and scaling walls to raid a series of ultra-luxury villas lined with palm trees. Cops used high-tech drones, helicopters, and thermal scanners in the terrifying sting, detecting even the most hidden cavities inside the mobster’s fortresses.

Investigators seized assets in Andorra, the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Monaco, Spain, and Switzerland, as well as Italy, police said. Dirty drug money was “reintroduced into the legal economy” via several sophisticated means, including luxury vacation resorts on the Costa del Sol, corporate holding companies, and securities portfolios. Eight foreign enterprises identified in the investigation were used for real estate investments and asset management.

Three others have been arrested in connection with the probe, which also saw a fleet of high-end vehicles, including a luxury Porsche sports car, taken away by the Guardia di Finanza.

Giovanni Melillo, Italy‘s top anti-mafia prosecutor, praised the massive operation as being of “great strategic importance” in a packed Palermo press conference. He added: “It is not simply a matter of identifying and seizing a significant portion of the illicit wealth accumulated over decades of related trafficking and parasitic exploitation of the territory – Sicily in particular – from an organisation as powerful as the Cosa Nostra.”

But the sting helped hinder the infamous, blood-soaked gang from rebuilding after Denaro’s death.

The evil mob boss, who ran the real-life Sicilian crime syndicate depicted in “The Godfather” movies, had a terrifyingly long rap sheet. He had been sentenced to life for multiple murders, including the barbaric killing of two legendary anti-mafia prosecutors in 1992.

Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were killed weeks apart in horrific explosions, and Denaro was the mastermind behind more deadly bombings in Rome, Florence, and Milan the following year.

Denaro once chillingly bragged he could “fill a cemetery all by myself” and was wanted for more than 50 murders. However, there is still something even more horrifying. He was also convicted for the monstrous kidnapping and murder of Giuseppe Di Matteo, the innocent 12-year-old son of a mafia man-turned-informant. The poor child was kept in chains for two years in captivity before being brutally strangled and dissolved in acid to erase any trace of him.

The Sicilian mafia’s last godfather went on the run in 1993, funnelling the sickening profits from his crimes into offshore accounts. He eluded authorities for the next thirty years amid a widespread crackdown on the Sicilian mob, but remained the absolute top name on Italy‘s most wanted list and became a dark cult figure.

On January 16, 2023, Denaro visited a Palermo clinic to seek cancer treatment under a false name and was dramatically arrested by armed police. He was tracked to a hideout near his Sicilian hometown of Castelvetrano. His lavish fugitive lifestyle was being handled by his sister and close confidantes.

Denaro was able to direct mafia operations from behind the scenes with their help, proving his grip on the underworld remained iron-tight even from the shadows. After continuing cancer treatment while locked up under maximum heavy security at L’Aquila prison, he died on September 25, 2023. But as his $232m empire crumbles under the weight of the law, the world is left remembering the true horror of his reign.
