A heartbreaking drowning tragedy has struck West Mersea Island beach in Essex, leaving a mother and her teenage daughter dead after they entered the water in a desperate attempt to save a seven-year-old boy who had been caught in dangerous currents. The devastating incident unfolded during what was meant to be a peaceful family day out at the beginning of the school holidays, but it ended in unimaginable loss for the Rahman family and deep shock throughout the local community.

Essex Police has confirmed that the victims were 41-year-old Shelina Rahman and her 15-year-old daughter, Samiha. The pair had reportedly gone into the sea after Samiha’s seven-year-old cousin, believed to be Shelina’s nephew, got into difficulty in the water. As the tide rapidly changed and powerful currents pulled people away from the shore, the rescue attempt turned into a tragedy of its own.

The warm summer afternoon was supposed to provide the perfect setting for a family outing. With temperatures around 21C and calm-looking waters surrounding the scenic West Mersea beach, there was little indication of the danger that would soon unfold. However, the island’s unique tidal conditions created a hidden threat, as rising water levels and strong currents can quickly become hazardous, especially for those unfamiliar with the area.

Mersea Island is known for its unusual geography, with access heavily influenced by the tides. The only road connecting the island to the mainland can become flooded twice a day, occasionally leaving visitors stranded for several hours. Around the beach, sandbanks and spits extend into the sea, and when the tide rises quickly, water can surround these areas and create dangerous conditions for swimmers and walkers.

According to police, emergency services were called at approximately 5:35pm on Wednesday after reports that multiple people were struggling in the water near Seaview Avenue, West Mersea. Despite the efforts of beachgoers, teenagers, lifeguards, and emergency responders who rushed to help, Shelina and Samiha could not be saved. They were pronounced dead at the scene, while the young boy they were trying to rescue was taken to hospital in critical condition.

The tragedy has left the Rahman family devastated. Relatives described Shelina as a kind, caring, and helpful person who dedicated herself to looking after her family. Her brother-in-law, Matiur Rahman, spoke about the overwhelming grief felt by those close to them, saying the family was struggling to process the sudden loss.

“We all feel very bad. My four brothers, my sister, my whole family — we are speechless. We cannot believe what we heard. We are very shocked,” he said.

He described Shelina, who lived in east London with her family, as a loving and generous person. Known by relatives as “Shally,” she was remembered as someone who always cared for others and was deeply devoted to her children.

Family friend Mishba Uddin, from Colchester, visited the scene after the incident and shared the family’s heartbreak. He explained that the group had travelled from east London and Barking for what was meant to be a simple day trip together.

He said he had heard that “the little one got into trouble then the other one tried to save” him, describing the victims as part of a hardworking family who were simply enjoying time together. He added that the entire community was struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

The father of the children was described as a doctor with Bangladeshi heritage, and those who knew the family said they were well-liked and respected within their community. News of the deaths quickly spread, causing grief far beyond the immediate area.

Naz Shah, the MP for Bradford West, who knows the family and has previously received support from them, expressed her deep sadness over the incident. She said she was devastated by the loss and described the family as wonderful people whose deaths had sent shockwaves through the community.

Witnesses who were at the beach described terrifying scenes as the rescue operation unfolded. Beach hut owner Beverly Smit, 60, said she heard emergency crews arriving and went to see what had happened. By the time she reached the area, people were already performing resuscitation efforts on the beach, while helicopters were searching nearby fields.

She spoke to a visitor who had tried to help those caught in the water. The man reportedly entered the sea several times to bring people back to safety, but the conditions were extremely difficult because the tide was moving quickly and the water was cold.

Ms Smit, who has experience assisting with sea rescues through her local rowing club, described the incident as a large-scale rescue operation that had turned into an unimaginable tragedy.

Other residents also shared their shock and sadness. West Mersea resident Rita Coombs described witnessing emergency workers trying to assist those involved and praised their dedication during the crisis. She said the scene was horrific and that the response teams worked tirelessly despite the heartbreaking circumstances.

Residents said the island was now filled with sadness as the community mourned the loss of Shelina and Samiha. Many expressed sympathy for the family members left behind and offered support to those affected by the tragedy.
