A man will appear in court today after being charged with manslaughter over the death of another man bitten by a German Shepherd on a footpath.

Lee Ellis, 55, was also charged with being the owner or person in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death.

West Yorkshire PoliceΒ were called to an altercation on the old railway line footpath off Blacker Lane in the Calder Grove area of Wakefield on Saturday afternoon.

A 55-year-old man was bitten by the dog during the incident and later died in hospital. The dog was seized by officers and continues to be held in police kennels.

Keen horse rider Ellis, a father-of-two who is separated from his wife and lives on Blacker Lane, was remanded in custody to appear at Leeds Magistrates’ Court today.

Detectives said they had identified and spoken to two other people who stopped to help the injured man at the scene following the incident at about 1.30pm.

The force added that the family of the man – who died in hospital shortly after 7pm on Saturday – were being supported today by specially trained officers.

Ellis bought his agricultural property for Β£5,000 in 2002 and renovated it with his ex-wife. The former couple renovated the house themselves, building in stables.

He is a keen farrier and frequently posts videos showing him taking care of horse hooves. The pair were often seen riding their horses in the area by neighbours.

Ellis shares two children with his wife but the couple separated earlier this year. A number of signs warning of guard dogs decorate the outside of Ellis’s house.

One neighbour told the Daily Mail his son was ‘scared to walk past the house’ because the dogs would ‘always bark so loudly’. Another said:Β ‘Whenever you walked past you would always hear the dogs barking loudly’.

One dog walker said: ‘We don’t normally get any trouble here. It’s very quiet. The path where it happened is a well-trodden route, there’s a lot of dog walkers. I just feel so sorry for the man who died.’

CHARLES MAY BE WELCOMING HIS SON BACK β€” BUT THE REAL BILL COULD ULTIMATELY LAND ON WILLIAM’S DESK. Harry and Meghan are not returning as working royals, so on paper, the Palace does not need to change anything. Archie and Lilibet will attend school in Britain, Charles will have his grandchildren closer to him, while the Sussexes continue their private lives. It sounds like an almost perfect arrangement. But there is one consequence of this arrangement that may only truly emerge when Charles is no longer the one making the decisions β€” and by then, William may no longer have the easy choices he has today. A heavy burden is already beginning to cast a shadow over William’s future…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported return to Britain can easily be presented as a family story: a son moving closer to a father undergoing cancer treatment,…

THERE’S ONE PROBLEM WITH THE STORY THAT HARRY AND MEGHAN SUDDENLY DECIDED TO RETURN TO BRITAIN: THEIR FOOTPRINTS WERE ALREADY THERE LAST YEAR. The Sussexes are now believed to be preparing to settle in the Cotswolds, with Archie and Lilibet potentially attending a local prep school. Their secret July visit appears to have given them an opportunity to scout the area before making a final decision. But it was only when a local property source revealed that the couple had apparently been quietly making inquiries about exactly this that the pieces began to fall into place. The Sussexes may have been keeping a major plan under wraps for far longer than the Palace β€” or the public β€” ever realised…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain may have been presented as a dramatic reversal, but the clues surrounding the Cotswolds suggest something far less spontaneous….

IF YOU THINK HARRY IS DRAGGING A RELUCTANT MEGHAN BACK TO BRITAIN, FRIENDS OF THE SUSSEXES ARE TELLING A VERY DIFFERENT STORY. Harry has never stopped feeling British, so his desire to bring Archie and Lilibet back to his homeland is hardly difficult to understand. The real surprise is Meghan, with sources insisting that she has not simply agreed to the move but is β€œfully behind it.” She is preparing to swap the California sunshine for a life in a country where she once spoke openly about loneliness, privacy concerns and the restrictions of royal existence. A trade-off this big is unlikely to be simply about Harry missing home β€” and what Meghan stands to gain from the move may be the most revealing part of the entire story.

Six years ago, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle left Britain convinced that their future lay elsewhere. California offered distance from royal life, room to build commercial careers…
