Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom is already attracting significant attention, but one of his latest decisions has added another layer of complexity to this new chapter.

According to a report from Sky News, the Duke of Sussex has stepped down from the board of African Parks, a wildlife conservation organization where he spent years building a connection and supporting conservation efforts across Africa.

The timing of the decision is especially notable. Harry’s departure from the organization comes just days before he, Meghan Markle, and their children prepare to return to the UK after years living in the United States.

For many people, Harry’s involvement with African Parks has been closely connected to his public identity. He served as president of the charity for six years before becoming a member of its board of directors in 2023.

However, his exit comes after the organization faced serious controversy surrounding allegations of human rights abuses.

In 2025, African Parks acknowledged that some incidents of abuse had occurred involving eco-guards in the Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo. The allegations followed an independent investigation that examined claims that rangers managed and paid by the organization had abused members of the indigenous Baka community.

African Parks later stated:

“In some incidents, human rights abuses have occurred, and we deeply regret the pain and suffering caused to the victims.”

The organization also emphasized:

“There is no place for any form of abuse in the name of conservation.”

Following the investigation, African Parks said it had strengthened its safeguarding systems both at the affected park and throughout the organization.

Despite leaving the board, Harry’s representatives stressed that his relationship with conservation work remains unchanged.

His spokesperson said:

“The Duke is proud of his 10 years with African Parks and fully supports the ongoing strengthening of its board.”

The statement also added:

“His commitment to conservation in Africa continues, and he remains a supporter of African Parks’ mission.”

Harry’s connection to the organization goes back many years. In 2016, he helped relocate hundreds of elephants in Malawi to a safer environment through an African Parks project. At the time, he described the experience as “amazing.”

The decision to leave the board comes as Harry and Meghan prepare for another major transition: returning to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The couple stepped back from their roles as working royals six years ago and moved to California. Now, they are preparing for what has been described as an extended stay in Britain.

Their children have reportedly already been enrolled in British schools, although the family’s exact living arrangements have not been confirmed.

However, their return is accompanied by several unresolved issues, including questions surrounding security arrangements and whether taxpayers will contribute to the cost.

Harry is also facing financial pressure after losing a High Court case involving Associated Newspapers Limited. Along with other high-profile figures, including Sir Elton John and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Harry sued the publisher over allegations of unlawful information-gathering.

Following the loss, Harry and the other claimants were reportedly required to pay more than £9.5 million in initial legal costs.

At the same time, Meghan Markle is also attracting attention regarding her own career plans. Reports have suggested that the former Suits actress is exploring a return to acting and has been linked to a potential role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen. However, no official agreement has been confirmed.

Netflix has since renewed The Gentlemen for a third season, adding further speculation around Meghan’s possible involvement.

Harry’s departure from African Parks does not appear to represent a complete break from conservation. Instead, it marks another adjustment in a period filled with major changes.

As Harry and Meghan prepare to establish a new chapter in the UK, they are returning not only to a different country but also to a much more complicated public environment.

The decision to step away from one role, while continuing to support its mission, reflects the difficult balance Harry now faces: maintaining causes important to him while navigating intense public scrutiny surrounding every move he makes.
