HARRY AND MEGHAN THOUGHT THEY HAD FOUND THE PERFECT PLACE TO START OVER IN THE U.K. — BUT THEIR NEW NEIGHBORS MAY GIVE MEGHAN REASON TO THINK AGAIN. The Cotswolds has good schools for Archie and Lilibet, is close to King Charles’s Highgrove House, and even suits the kind of lifestyle Meghan is known to enjoy. But almost immediately after the Sussexes returned, local chat groups reportedly began buzzing about their arrival — with reactions that few may have expected. And the identities of some of the people living within this social circle may be the detail that makes Meghan realize she has just moved somewhere very different from Montecito.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may have returned to the United Kingdom hoping to build a new chapter around family, schools, and a quieter countryside life, but the Cotswolds could prove to be a far more complicated choice than its postcard-perfect villages suggest.

According to a report from News.com.au, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have already become a major topic of conversation among locals, with speculation surrounding a possible $22 million home, potential schools for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and whether the couple can comfortably fit into one of Britain’s most socially connected and strongly royalist regions.

At the moment, Harry and Meghan are reportedly staying with billionaire hedge fund manager Ian Wace while searching for a permanent home. Wace is already a friendly connection; the Sussexes reportedly holidayed on his private Scottish island in July.

Beyond those gates, however, the atmosphere may become considerably less welcoming.

One source said local residents “simply can’t wait to see if Meghan really is as ghastly as everyone makes out.”

Journalist Tom Sykes described the reaction in even broader terms, saying locals were “amused, entertained, appalled and titillated by their new neighbours.”

That may be the central contradiction of the Sussexes’ potential Cotswolds move.

The region offers exactly what Harry and Meghan appear to need: beautiful countryside, strong preparatory schools for their children, privacy, access to Soho Farmhouse, and proximity to King Charles at Highgrove House.

Yet socially, it also places them in a community filled with people who are close to the royal family or who have openly criticized Meghan and Harry in the past.

Queen Camilla is perhaps the most important example.

She has maintained a home just across the border in Wiltshire since her divorce from Andrew Parker Bowles in 1995 and reportedly still spends many weekends there.

Journalist Rachel Johnson said that anything Harry and Meghan might say locally could take only “five minutes” to reach Camilla, adding that “there are a lot of loose lips” in the area.

“The Cotswolds is very royalist,” Johnson said.

That creates an obvious challenge for a couple whose public disputes with the royal institution have shaped much of their identity since leaving official royal duties.

In a place where social circles overlap so closely, a private lunch or drinks party could potentially become much less private than expected.

The Beckhams add another layer.

David and Victoria Beckham were once close to Harry and Meghan, but their relationship reportedly deteriorated. By the time of the Sussexes’ 2018 wedding celebrations, David and Victoria did not attend the evening reception, while George and Amal Clooney did, despite reportedly not having met the newlyweds beforehand.

Since then, David Beckham has grown closer to King Charles, becoming an ambassador for the King’s Trust, receiving a knighthood, and even bonding with the monarch over beekeeping.

Then there is Baroness Bamford, the figure behind the Daylesford Organics empire.

Lady Bamford has not hidden her opinion of Meghan. After the Duchess launched As Ever, she called her “crazy” and said, “she hasn’t got any history. Or authenticity.”

Jeremy Clarkson is another prominent local presence.

His Diddly Squat Farm sits in the Cotswolds, and his history with Meghan is far more hostile. In a 2022 column, Clarkson said he hated Meghan “on a cellular level” and described a humiliating fantasy involving her being publicly paraded while crowds threw excrement.

The backlash was enormous.

The column triggered around 25,000 complaints to Britain’s independent press standards body, which later ruled that it was “humiliating and degrading.”

Harry and Meghan accused Clarkson of using “hate rhetoric.”

Other prominent Cotswolds figures make the social landscape even more complicated.

Sir Ben Elliot, the former chairman of the Conservative Party and founder of a concierge service catering to the ultra-wealthy, is Queen Camilla’s nephew.

Interior designer and social figure Nicky Haslam, a close friend of Camilla, has described Meghan as “ghastly but she’s got guts.”

Crown Princess Marie Chantal of Greece also has strong royal connections. Her late father-in-law, King Constantine, was one of Prince William’s godparents, and William is godfather to her son Prince Constantine Alexios.

When Harry’s memoir Spare was published, Marie Chantal posted an image showing the book next to another titled How To Kill Your Family.

For Harry and Meghan, this means a move to the Cotswolds would not simply place them among wealthy neighbors.

It would place them inside an unusually dense network of royal friendships, old social alliances, former friends, outspoken critics, and people with direct access to Queen Camilla and King Charles.

There are advantages.

The area offers highly regarded prep schools, which matters because reports suggest enrolling Archie and Lilibet in British schools may have been a major reason for the family’s return.

Highgrove House is nearby, giving Harry an obvious opportunity to spend more time near his father.

Soho Farmhouse is also within reach, offering Meghan a familiar social environment.

And not everyone nearby is hostile.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, as well as Beyoncé and Jay-Z, have reportedly been spending time in the area and have previously been linked with house searches there.

Still, the emotional transition may be particularly difficult for Meghan.

She has previously spoken about how deeply her earlier life in Britain affected her mental health, including experiencing suicidal thoughts.

The article also notes that she was never reported to have developed a particularly close friendship network during her previous time in the country.

California offered something very different.

By leaving, Meghan is moving away from her mother, Doria Ragland, a strong network of friends and defenders, the base of her As Ever business, the Montecito garden she frequently featured online, and even the family’s chickens.

That is why the question surrounding the Cotswolds goes far beyond whether Harry and Meghan can find the right house.

On paper, the region may offer everything they need.

In reality, it could place Meghan directly inside a social world where people already have strong opinions about her, where royal loyalties run deep, and where even private comments may not remain private for very long.

Harry may be returning home.

But Meghan may be entering one of the few places in Britain where simply being another wealthy new neighbor could be almost impossible.

And that may be the real test of whether the Sussexes’ British comeback can become a genuine fresh start — or whether the past is already waiting for them just beyond the garden gate.
