Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom has created something that has been missing for years: proximity.

For a long time, distance made the fractured relationship between Harry and Prince William easier to leave unresolved. Harry was largely based abroad, visits to Britain were limited, and opportunities for the brothers to meet were rare.

Now that has changed.

Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie, and Princess Lilibet reportedly arrived in Birmingham on August 26 and are expected to remain in Britain for an extended period, with Archie and Lilibet attending school there.

That means the question of Harry and William’s relationship can no longer be dismissed as something separated by thousands of miles.

But according to InStyle, William and Kate Middleton are not planning to react publicly to the Sussexes’ return.

A source close to the Prince and Princess of Wales said they are deliberately avoiding a “knee-jerk reaction.”

“They are watching this space. It’s private—they don’t feel the need to say anything or demonstrate anything outwardly,” the insider said.

That response is important precisely because of what it does not contain.

There is no public celebration.

There is no obvious rejection.

There is no attempt to perform reconciliation for the cameras.

Instead, William and Kate appear to be choosing silence.

And in the context of everything that has happened between the brothers, silence may be the safest position available.

Another source has suggested that Harry’s move back to Britain gives him the “best opportunity” to reconnect with William.

Geographically, that makes sense.

Harry is no longer simply passing through for a brief engagement. His wife and children are with him, the family is expected to remain in the country for a longer period, and the children are preparing to establish a school routine in Britain.

That creates possibilities for contact that did not exist when Harry’s visits were short and tightly scheduled.

But physical distance was never the only problem.

The source close to William and Kate reportedly warned that any attempt at repairing the relationship “will be a slow build” because “there is a deep sense of betrayal.”

That may be the most important line in the entire situation.

Harry can return to Britain.

He can live closer to his brother.

He can create more opportunities for family encounters.

But none of those things automatically erase the emotional history between them.

Royal biographer Robert Jobson made a similar point on August 20 when discussing William’s reported reaction to Harry’s return.

“I feel that William must be slightly aghast by the whole thing,” Jobson said.

He described Harry as “the prodigal son coming back” and argued that the move puts pressure on William “to act in a more pragmatic way.”

That pressure could become increasingly difficult to avoid.

As long as Harry lived primarily abroad, William could continue with his responsibilities without constantly confronting the question of whether the brothers should meet.

Now Harry is physically back in the same country.

Every family event, public appearance, royal gathering, or significant occasion can potentially revive the same question: will William and Harry finally sit down together?

Jobson raised exactly that possibility.

“Are they really going to have William and Harry sitting ‘round a table with all that’s gone on? Perhaps the King is hoping that it will be a chance for reconciliation.”

King Charles therefore becomes an important part of the equation.

If Charles hopes Harry’s return could create an opening for reconciliation, William may eventually find himself balancing his own feelings against a broader family desire to reduce tensions.

But recent history shows how difficult that could be.

When Harry visited Britain in June to promote the Invictus Games, which are scheduled to take place in Birmingham next year from July 10 to July 17, reports said there was “no chance” of a reunion with William during that trip.

That was only a few months before Harry returned with his entire family.

The difference now is that this is no longer simply another short visit.

Harry’s children will be attending school in Britain, meaning the Sussexes’ presence could become part of everyday life rather than an occasional royal headline.

That may fundamentally change the dynamic.

Harry himself has previously indicated that he does not want the estrangement to continue forever.

During his 2023 interview with Anderson Cooper, he said he looked forward to the possibility that he and William could “find peace.”

At the same time, Harry acknowledged that the brothers were not speaking.

Three years later, the physical circumstances have changed dramatically, but there is little evidence in the report that the emotional reality has changed at the same speed.

That is why William and Kate’s refusal to make a public statement could be more meaningful than a dramatic reaction.

Public gestures are easy to interpret but difficult to undo.

A welcoming statement could immediately create expectations of reconciliation.

A hostile statement could make the situation worse.

Silence allows William and Kate to observe what Harry’s return actually looks like before deciding whether anything should change.

It also prevents private family decisions from being dictated by public pressure.

And perhaps that is exactly what the source means when saying they are “watching this space.”

They do not need to publicly prove that they support Harry.

They do not need to publicly prove that they oppose him.

For now, they can simply wait.

The irony is that Harry’s return may make waiting increasingly difficult.

The longer he remains in Britain, the more natural the possibility of an encounter becomes.

Archie and Lilibet are establishing lives there.

Harry is geographically closer.

King Charles may see an opportunity.

And every passing month could make the absence of a meeting between the brothers more noticeable.

That does not mean reconciliation is inevitable.

The reported “deep sense of betrayal” suggests the opposite: any progress would likely require time, trust, and private conversations that cannot be manufactured simply because Harry has crossed the Atlantic.

But it does mean the situation has entered a new phase.

For years, the question was whether Harry would come back.

Now he has.

The next question is whether William will eventually decide that saying nothing is no longer enough.
