IT’S SHOWTIME — HARRY IS READY FOR HIS NEW FILM ABOUT PRINCESS DIANA. Just as the Palace had feared, Harry has been quietly preparing a series of new projects behind the scenes. The new film could mark the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death, and at this point, Harry appears to have several advantages that could allow him to turn the project into reality almost immediately. But what may look like an attempt to honor Diana’s legacy has reportedly pushed his relationship with Prince William even closer to the point of no return. What William allegedly finds hardest to accept is not simply that Harry wants to make a film about their mother, but the way Harry is preparing to tell her story. The crucial detail is below.

For Prince Harry, returning to Britain may be about far more than geography.

If the latest claims are accurate, his return could also place him at the center of one of the most emotionally sensitive issues still surrounding the modern Royal Family: who gets to shape the public memory of Princess Diana.

According to the Daily Mail, royal commentator Richard Kay has claimed that Harry is back in Britain partly because he wants to make his own television film about his mother. With 2027 marking the 30th anniversary of Diana’s death in Paris, the timing could hardly be more significant.

Prince Harry has begun approaching Princess Diana's old friends to take part in a film about his mother, Richard Kay has claimed

Kay says Harry has already started approaching some of Diana’s old friends and others who knew her personally, asking them to take part in the project.

“I am told that one of the reasons Harry’s here is to make a television film, his own film, about his mother,” Kay said.

He added that the project is likely to occupy “a lot of his headspace over the next 12 months.”

On the surface, that might sound like a natural act of remembrance from a son preparing to mark a major anniversary. But the real significance may lie in what such a project could mean for Harry’s already fractured relationship with Prince William.

Diana was the mother of both brothers.\

Next year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Princess's death in Paris, with a string of events and tributes already being planned

That simple fact is precisely what makes the situation so delicate.

Kay argues that both William and Harry have been deeply shaped by Diana’s memory over the past decade. He pointed back to the documentaries made around the 20th anniversary of her death, roughly nine years ago, describing that period as one of the last times the brothers were genuinely “in step together.”

Since then, their relationship has deteriorated dramatically.

The brothers are understood not to have spoken properly for much of the last four years, and their last public appearance together was at King Charles’s Coronation in May 2023.

Now, with another major Diana anniversary approaching, the same subject that once brought them together may instead expose how far apart they have become.

The Daily Mail's Senior Editor-at-Large predicted the anniversary will drag Diana's legacy back into focus and place fresh strain on William and Harry's already fractured relationship

Kay’s most provocative argument is that Harry has increasingly positioned himself as the son most publicly associated with Diana’s legacy.

“People always link Harry to Diana, but she was the mother of two boys,” he said.

That distinction matters because William has generally been far less publicly vocal about his mother. Kay suggested that this difference has created frustration for the Prince of Wales, especially if Harry’s public storytelling begins to look as though he is defining Diana’s legacy on his own terms.

Kay went even further, suggesting that Harry has increasingly connected himself not only to Diana personally, but to the wider Spencer identity.

Editor-at-Large Alison Boshoff reported this week that a film studio is among the features on the Sussexes' wish list as they search for a home in the Cotswolds

He described this as part of a pattern in which the “Spencer brand” and “Spencer name” could be used to distinguish Harry from the House of Windsor.

Whether that interpretation is fair or not, recent events do give the Spencer connection extra weight.

During Harry and Meghan’s visit to Britain in July, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their children Archie and Lilibet, stayed with the Spencer family at Althorp, Diana’s ancestral family estate.

That visit was symbolically powerful.

Elsewhere in the show, Richard Eden revealed how William and Catherine intend to respond to the Sussexes' return. From what he has been told, they plan to ignore it entirely

Althorp is not just another English country estate. In the context of Harry’s relationship with his mother’s memory, it represents the Diana side of his family history in the clearest possible way.

The timing becomes even more striking because Earl Spencer, Diana’s brother, is also preparing to release a new book about his sister this month.

In other words, interest in Diana is already beginning to build ahead of the 30th anniversary.

Harry’s potential television project would therefore enter an environment in which Diana’s life, legacy, family and public image are once again being actively revisited.

There may also be a practical reason to take Harry’s reported film ambitions seriously.

Another Daily Mail report cited in the article said Harry and Meghan are looking for a home in the Cotswolds, and that a film studio is among the features reportedly on their wish list.

That does not prove a Diana project is underway, but it fits the broader picture of the Sussexes potentially expanding their media activity in Britain.

Meanwhile, William and Catherine appear unlikely to engage publicly with Harry and Meghan’s return at all.

Richard Eden said friends of the Prince and Princess of Wales believe the couple intend to treat the Sussexes’ presence in Britain as irrelevant to their own lives and duties.

“Why should they do anything differently?” Eden quoted their friends as saying.

The argument is straightforward: Harry and Meghan are now private citizens and no longer working royals, so whether they live in California or Britain should make no difference to William and Catherine.

Eden also used much harsher language, comparing the situation to dealing with “a spoiled child” and arguing that giving in would only encourage further demands.

That response suggests the Waleses may prefer silence rather than confrontation.

But silence may not prevent tension.

A film about Diana could be difficult for William to ignore emotionally even if he refuses to respond publicly. Any attempt to tell Diana’s story through Harry’s personal lens would inevitably raise questions about representation, memory and ownership.

That is what makes this story larger than a possible documentary.

It is really about two brothers who once shared the same grief but now appear to process that inheritance in very different ways.

Harry speaks about Diana openly and repeatedly ties his identity to her legacy.

William appears far more restrained.

Neither approach automatically gives one brother a stronger claim than the other.

But if Harry does spend the next year building a major television project around Diana, the 30th anniversary of her death may not simply revive public fascination with the late princess.

It could also force the unresolved conflict between her two sons back into view.

And this time, Diana’s memory may become not the thing that unites them, but the issue that exposes just how permanently divided they have become.
