MEGHAN SPENT SIX YEARS GETTING AWAY FROM BRITAIN — SO WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE BIG ENOUGH TO MAKE HER WILLINGLY COME BACK? California gave the Duchess everything she once said she needed: freedom, Montecito, celebrity friends and a business of her own in As Ever. Harry’s desire to return is easier to understand, with Charles, old friends and Invictus still tying him to Britain, but Meghan is the one making the far greater trade-off. Strangely, something about their July visit appears to have changed that calculation. And Liz Jones believes one place Meghan visited during that trip could explain why she suddenly began seeing a completely different Britain from the one she once fled.

The most intriguing question surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s reported return to Britain is not why Harry wants to come home. His motives are relatively easy to understand. Britain is where he grew up, where many of his oldest friends remain, where much of his charitable work is rooted and where his father is undergoing cancer treatment.

The harder question is Meghan.

A Timeline of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Moves Between the U.K. and U.S.

Six years after leaving royal life, why would a woman who spoke so openly about the unhappiness, restrictions and hostility she associated with Britain willingly exchange the California lifestyle she built for herself for another extended chapter in the UK?

According to a Daily Mail article by Liz Jones, the official explanation is education. Harry reportedly believes British schools are “wonderful” and wants Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, to receive a traditional British education. The family is expected to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London, while retaining its homes in Montecito and Portugal.

That explanation makes sense for Harry. But Meghan’s decision arguably requires more explanation.

Since leaving Britain, she has built a life seemingly designed around independence from the institution she once served. California offered the Sussexes celebrity connections, commercial freedom and physical distance from the Royal Family. Meghan now has her As Ever lifestyle business, which Jones says she could continue running remotely from Britain.

She has also barely returned to the UK. According to the article, she accompanied Harry here only twice after their departure: for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral and during this summer’s family visit.

So what changed?

Jones offers an intriguing possibility: Althorp.

During the Sussex family’s July trip, they visited the ancestral home of Diana, Princess of Wales, including what were thought to be visits connected with Diana’s resting place. Jones speculates that the experience may have given Meghan a very different perspective on Harry’s British identity.

That distinction matters.

Harry’s heritage does not begin and end with Buckingham Palace. There is another side of his history — the Spencer family. Althorp represents centuries of tradition without being Windsor territory.

Jones wonders whether its stately home, parkland, history and the experience of being welcomed by Diana’s family offered Meghan something emotionally different from her previous encounters with royal Britain.

There is no confirmation from Meghan that Althorp changed her mind, and Jones presents this as her own theory. But it highlights the central paradox of Meghan’s return: perhaps reconnecting Harry with Britain no longer necessarily means reconnecting herself with the system she once rejected.

She could potentially embrace one without fully surrendering to the other.

There is another major factor: the children.

Meghan previously had serious concerns about raising Archie and Lilibet under intense British scrutiny. But Jones points toward the example of George, Charlotte and Louis, who have been able to attend school with a significant degree of normality despite their extraordinary positions.

Perhaps watching the Wales children grow up has altered the calculation.

For Archie and Lilibet, Britain would also provide access to a part of their identity that California cannot reproduce. A British education would place them inside their father’s culture rather than simply hearing about it from thousands of miles away.

And for Harry, the advantages extend further.

A return would place him closer to his charities, while Birmingham is due to host the Invictus Games next year. It would also reconnect him with old friends whom Jones suggests could provide the camaraderie he may have missed in America.

Then there is King Charles.

Jones raises the possibility that the King’s health has accelerated Harry’s thinking. Charles is reportedly pleased about having his son and grandchildren closer, although he is said to have learned of the move only on Sunday.

If Harry has concluded that time with his father matters more than maintaining geographical distance from the institution, returning now becomes much easier to understand.

William remains the unresolved complication.

Jones questions whether the Prince of Wales was even warned about the move. The brothers’ relationship remains one of the greatest obstacles surrounding Harry’s reintegration into British family life.

Yet perhaps that is precisely what makes this return different from a royal comeback.

Harry and Meghan are reportedly moving into a non-royal home. Meghan can continue running As Ever. Harry can pursue his charities. Their children can attend British schools. None of those things automatically requires William’s approval or a restoration of the Sussexes as working royals.

Jones goes further, arguing that the monarchy might actually benefit from their presence. She provocatively admits she is “bored with the Prince and Princess of Wales,” while pointing to an ageing generation of senior royals including Queen Camilla and Princess Anne. In her view, Meghan’s outspoken personality could inject energy into a royal landscape she considers increasingly predictable.

Whether the Palace would welcome that kind of energy is another matter.

The more important question is whether Meghan herself has redefined what Britain represents.

In 2020, Britain was inseparable from royal duty, hostile headlines, family tensions and restrictions. In 2026, it could mean something else: her children’s education, Diana’s family, Harry’s friendships, proximity to Charles and a British home that exists independently of Palace walls.

Jones writes that Meghan would hardly abandon Montecito without a “very tempting, organic carrot.”

Perhaps the real story of this return is discovering what that carrot is.

Because Harry coming home is not especially mysterious.

Meghan deciding that Britain is worth coming home to is.
