Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain has been presented as a major family move, but the most intriguing part of the story may not be their new home, their children’s school, or even their renewed proximity to King Charles.

It may be the money.

After six years in California, Harry and Meghan have moved back to the UK with Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. The children are set to attend school in Britain, and the family is beginning what has been described as a new chapter.

But according to a report from Woman’s Day via Now To Love Australia, the cost of that new chapter is raising questions because it appears to sit awkwardly beside repeated claims that the Sussexes are operating on a tighter budget.

The first figure to attract attention was their flight.

Harry and Meghan reportedly transported themselves, their children and their dogs from Los Angeles to Britain on a private plane costing around $12,000 per hour. The total bill was estimated at about $120,000.

For a family that values privacy and security, chartering a private aircraft may have practical advantages. But the expense still stands out because it comes at a time when financial pressure has reportedly been building around Harry.

His privacy lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited was dismissed, and Harry and the other claimants were reported to be facing legal costs approaching £35 million.

Against that backdrop, an insider quoted by Woman’s Day expressed surprise at the Sussexes’ spending.

“Meghan and Harry are running on a very limited budget so it’s a shock to see them blowing $120k on a private jet using the dogs as an excuse,” the source claimed.

That is only one part of the apparent expense.

The insider said Archie and Lilibet’s schooling alone costs more than $60,000 per year, while the Sussexes’ rented property in Britain is said to cost around $75,000 per month.

And according to the same source, that figure does not include renovations Meghan is reportedly planning.

If those numbers are accurate, the family’s UK move involves substantial recurring costs even before everyday expenses are considered.

The source also claimed that Meghan bought a new wardrobe for each member of the family, adding another layer to the speculation over how the move is being financed.

The question becomes more complicated because Harry and Meghan were once associated with extremely lucrative commercial deals after leaving royal life in 2020.

Their post-Megxit period included a reported $100 million partnership with Netflix.

At the same time, rumours have repeatedly suggested that those financial reserves may no longer be as strong as they once appeared.

That remains speculation.

Still, the suggestion gains attention because the family’s current expenses appear substantial.

The return itself also came after an abrupt change in plans earlier this year.

Harry visited Britain for five days in July, but Meghan and the children reportedly withdrew from that trip at the last moment because of security concerns.

Only a short time later, the entire family moved back to the UK and enrolled Archie and Lilibet in school there.

Although Harry and Meghan have not yet made a public appearance since returning, Meghan has already hinted publicly at transition through her lifestyle brand As Ever.

While promoting a new champagne, she wrote: “A new chapter to celebrate.”

The phrase is simple, but it fits the larger image being created around the move.

This is not being presented as a brief visit.

The children are being educated in Britain. The family is paying for an expensive residence. They travelled over on a private aircraft. And at least according to one insider, additional spending is already underway.

The question is whether all of this represents confidence or financial risk.

One source suggested that if Harry and Meghan really are paying for everything themselves, they are “going all in.”

That interpretation may be the most important one.

Perhaps the Sussexes are not financially distressed at all to the extent rumoured.

Perhaps they still have enough resources to absorb the cost.

Or perhaps outside financial help is involved.

The available information does not settle that issue.

What it does show is a striking contradiction between the public narrative around financial strain and the visible scale of their lifestyle choices.
