For years, Prince George has grown up surrounded by tradition, responsibility, and the expectations that come with being the future king. But behind the formal appearances and royal duties, experts believe the young prince has also needed something much simpler: a fun, relaxed adult figure who treats him like an ordinary child.

According to body language expert Judi James, that role has increasingly been taken by Mike Tindall, who has developed a remarkably close relationship with George. She believes Mike has helped fill what she describes as a “Harry-shaped gap” in the young prince’s life after Prince Harry moved away from the UK.

The special connection between George and Mike became especially noticeable during the 2023 Christmas Day service at Sandringham. While the young royals were performing traditional duties, greeting crowds and accepting gifts, Mike shared a spontaneous moment of affection with George. He placed an arm around the young prince’s shoulders, pulled him closer, and kissed him on the side of the head.

The gesture immediately caught public attention because it was so different from typical royal interactions. It was not a formal display or a carefully planned public moment. Instead, it looked like a natural reaction from a loving uncle figure proud of the child standing beside him.

Judi James explained that Mike’s behavior showed a relationship built on genuine affection. She suggested that Mike treats George in the same way he treats his own children, rather than constantly reminding him of his future responsibilities.

This could be especially meaningful for George, who has spent much of his childhood under intense public attention. As the second in line to the throne, every appearance, gesture, and expression is often analyzed by royal watchers. Having someone like Mike around may provide a sense of normality that is difficult to find within royal life.

Before Mike became such an important presence, many believed Prince Harry naturally filled the role of the fun and playful uncle. In his memoir Spare, Harry wrote about his excitement at becoming an uncle and his hopes of being a close presence in George’s childhood.

Harry imagined casually visiting William and Catherine’s home, arriving with gifts and spending time playing with young George. He wanted to be the kind of uncle who brought laughter and freedom into the lives of his nieces and nephews.

However, after Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties and relocated to the United States in 2020, regular face-to-face contact with George and his siblings became far less common. The distance created a noticeable change in their relationship.

Judi James believes Mike Tindall has naturally stepped into that missing space. She described him as the kind of “fun uncle” every child would appreciate, but said his presence may be even more valuable for George because of the unique pressure surrounding his future.

Unlike many adults around George who must consider royal protocol and public expectations, Mike can offer something different. His background as a professional athlete gives him a perspective based on teamwork, competition, humor, and resilience.

Mike is a former England rugby player and World Cup winner who understands both success and failure. His personality allows George to experience moments where winning is not the only goal and mistakes are not something to fear.

Experts have also pointed out that Mike shares some qualities with Prince Harry, including confidence, fearlessness, and a playful personality. However, one key difference is that Mike has maintained a careful balance between being close to the Royal Family and respecting their privacy.

His relationship with George appears to be built on trust rather than status. He does not treat George only as a future monarch, but as a young boy who needs encouragement, humor, and genuine connection.

The wider Tindall family has also remained close to the Wales children. Zara and Mike’s children, Mia, Lena, and Lucas, have grown up alongside George, Charlotte, and Louis, giving the cousins opportunities to enjoy a more ordinary family bond away from public attention.
