A seven-year-old girl and her aunt have died following a devastating house fire in Middlesbrough, with investigators examining whether the blaze could be connected to tensions surrounding a fatal A66 crash that killed seven people days earlier.
The victims were identified as Valentina Foster, aged seven, and her aunt Natalie McDonald, 34. The child had reportedly been staying at her auntβs home during the school holidays when the fire broke out in the Grangetown area during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Emergency services rushed to the property after receiving reports of a serious blaze at around 05:23 BST. Despite efforts to rescue those inside, both Valentina and Ms McDonald died. One woman was taken to hospital in critical condition, while three other people suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Police investigate possible criminal links
Cleveland Police have launched a murder investigation into the fire and said they are keeping an open mind about the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Officers have not ruled out the possibility that the incident may be linked to wider organised crime activity following the deadly A66 collision.
Two men, aged 23 and 31, have been arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in police custody as detectives continue their enquiries.
