For years, Meghan Markle has tried to build a new identity beyond acting. Since stepping away from royal duties with Prince Harry in 2020, she has explored multiple roles: podcast host, producer, lifestyle entrepreneur, philanthropist and media personality. But now, with reports that she remains in discussions for a role in Netflix’s The Gentlemen, Meghan may be returning to the very profession that made her famous in the first place.

According to a report from Fox News Digital, Meghan’s possible return to scripted acting has reopened a larger conversation about her public image and whether any of the identities she created after leaving royal life have truly replaced her original career as an actress.

The potential role has not been officially confirmed, and discussions are still considered to be in the early stages. However, the possibility alone has attracted enormous attention because it represents something symbolic: Meghan stepping back in front of the camera not as the Duchess of Sussex, but as a performer.

The Career She Left Behind May Be the One That Still Fits Best

Before becoming one of the most recognizable women in the world, Meghan was known primarily as an actress.

She built her career playing Rachel Zane on Suits, appearing in the legal drama for seven seasons before leaving the show following her engagement to Prince Harry.

After joining the Royal Family, Meghan ended her acting career and focused on royal responsibilities and charitable work. But after leaving royal duties, she began creating a completely different professional image.

If Meghan does appear in The Gentlemen, the decision could be carefully calculated.

The Netflix series, starring Theo James, Kaya Scodelario and Giancarlo Esposito, is already an established project with a strong audience. The story follows Eddie Horniman, who inherits his father’s title as Duke of Halstead and discovers that the family estate is connected to a hidden cannabis operation.

For Meghan, joining an existing hit could offer advantages. She would not need to carry an entire project alone, and the show already has a built-in audience.

Schofield acknowledged this possibility, saying:

“The Gentlemen would be a clever choice.”

However, she also highlighted the biggest challenge: Meghan must prove that audiences can focus on the character she plays rather than the person she is outside the role.

The Problem of Being More Famous Than the Character

The central issue surrounding Meghan’s acting comeback is not whether she can perform. Many experts acknowledge that she has legitimate acting experience.

The challenge is whether audiences will accept her as simply another actress.

Doug Eldridge, founder of Achilles PR, described this as a long-running problem:

After leaving royal duties, the couple signed major deals, including a multi-million-dollar podcast partnership with Spotify and a production agreement with Netflix.

Their podcast “Archetypes” ended after one season. Netflix cancelled the animated series “Pearl” before production. Meghan’s lifestyle brand went through a long development period before becoming As Ever. Meanwhile, “With Love, Meghan” reportedly shifted into seasonal specials rather than receiving a traditional third season.

Dan Wakeford of Celebrity Intelligence argued that Meghan may actually have little to lose by returning to acting.

He suggested that her lifestyle projects struggled because they depended heavily on the strength of her personal brand rather than a traditional entertainment format.

According to Wakeford, the strongest move may be returning to the profession where she already has experience.

A Comeback Built on Curiosity — But Tested by Longevity

One thing Meghan has consistently demonstrated is her ability to attract global attention.

Schofield noted:

“Meghan brings something you cannot manufacture with a marketing budget, and that’s global curiosity.”

A project featuring Meghan would almost certainly generate headlines. People would watch the first episode simply because they want to see how she performs after years away.

But attention and success are not the same thing.

As Schofield explained:

“There’s an enormous difference between attracting attention and building a sustainable career.”

Meghan’s potential return to acting could become the most natural career move she has made since leaving Suits. But the real challenge will not be getting people to watch.
