A BITTER REALITY HAS COME CRASHING DOWN ON HARRY AND MEGHAN. Meghan once complained that their home at Kensington Palace was too small, while Frogmore Cottage was reportedly seen as unsuitable for the status of a British prince like Harry. But this time, as they rush back to Britain, the home they may have to accept could be seen as the price of the wounds they left behind. There is one enormous difference between this new home and everything Harry once had — and it may say far more about the couple’s position today than the address itself…

There is something deeply symbolic about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returning to Britain six years after Megxit and discovering that “home” now means something very different.

Once, their British address came with royal connections, royal estates and the privileges surrounding the life of a senior prince. This time, Harry and Meghan are reportedly preparing to move into a private, non-royal property when they return with Archie and Lilibet.

The contrast is difficult to miss.

Harry and Meghan are expected to return to Britain later this month, with seven-year-old Archie and five-year-old Lilibet beginning school in the UK. Reports say the couple have already secured a home, although its location is being deliberately kept secret for privacy and security reasons. They will remain non-working royals rather than resuming official duties.

And that makes their housing history particularly interesting.

From “It’s Small” to Frogmore

Before California and Montecito, Harry and Meghan lived at Nottingham Cottage within the Kensington Palace estate.

In their Netflix documentary, Meghan recalled the contrast between the grand-sounding address and the reality of the house, describing the cottage as small. Harry similarly joked about its low ceilings.

But their next royal home represented a substantial upgrade.

Queen Elizabeth II gave the couple the use of Frogmore Cottage at Windsor following their marriage. The Grade II-listed property underwent an extensive £2.4 million renovation, including converting five separate residential units into one family home.

Harry’s own account actually complicates the idea that Frogmore was beneath him. In Spare, he described it as “charming, full of potential” and called the opportunity a “dream come true.”

That distinction matters: there is no solid basis in the cited reporting for saying Harry or Meghan publicly declared Frogmore unsuitable for his status as a prince.

Yet Frogmore would become one of the clearest symbols of how dramatically their position changed.

Harry and Meghan lived there for only around ten months before stepping back as working royals and moving abroad. Although the renovation initially involved public money, the Sussexes subsequently repaid the £2.4 million expenditure.

Then came the final break.

In 2023, Harry and Meghan confirmed they had been requested to vacate Frogmore Cottage. Buckingham Palace later confirmed they had left, meaning the Sussexes no longer had their own British royal residence.

Three years later, they are returning — but Frogmore is not being handed back.

No Palace Keys This Time

The family’s new home will reportedly be a private property, separate from royal estates.

That may be the most revealing part of the entire arrangement.

Harry is returning as the King’s son, but not as a working representative of the monarchy. Meghan is returning as the Duchess of Sussex, but without the institutional role she occupied before 2020.

Their titles remain, but their domestic arrangements now reflect their independence from the institution.

That is not necessarily a punishment. It is also the logical consequence of the life they chose when they stepped away from working royal duties.

And despite the dramatic appearance of a return to Britain, Harry and Meghan are not simply reversing Megxit. Reports say they intend to retain their home in Montecito as well as their property in Portugal.

Britain is becoming another major base rather than necessarily replacing everything they built abroad.

So Where Will They Live?

That remains the intriguing mystery.

Reports have suggested several possible areas without confirming any of them.

The Cotswolds would offer privacy and a social environment familiar to wealthy American celebrities. More importantly for Harry, it would place him relatively close to King Charles’s Highgrove residence.

For Meghan, the area also has familiar associations through Soho Farmhouse and her longstanding friendship with Soho House executive Markus Anderson.

Another emotionally significant possibility is Northamptonshire, near Althorp, Princess Diana’s childhood home and burial place. Harry recently took Archie and Lilibet to visit their grandmother’s grave.

Then there is Windsor — an obvious royal location, but potentially an uncomfortable one.

William and Catherine have established their long-term family home nearby. Given the continuing strain between Harry and William, deliberately settling close to the Wales family could create precisely the proximity the Sussexes may prefer to avoid.

The exact answer remains secret, so none of those possibilities should be treated as confirmed.

But perhaps the postcode is less important than what is already known.

The Real Difference

Harry once had a residence on a royal estate provided for his use by the late Queen. He spent millions renovating it, repaid that money, left royal duties and eventually surrendered the property.

Now he is returning on entirely different terms.

There is no confirmed palace waiting for the Sussex family and no restoration of Frogmore. Instead, Harry and Meghan are establishing their own private home while their children begin a British education.

That could be viewed as freedom — the independence they wanted in 2020 finally operating on British soil.

But it can equally be read as a powerful reminder of what changed after Megxit.

Harry is coming home, but the royal home he once knew is no longer his to return to.

And perhaps that is the bitterest irony of this new chapter: the Sussexes are returning to the same country, surrounded by many of the same people and places, but this time the front door they walk through will unmistakably belong to their private life — not the Royal Family.
