Harry and Meghan have just met with King Charles, but Buckingham Palace is being warned to proceed with caution. A royal expert believes this may be more than just a family reunion. A long-term strategy appears to be emerging, suggesting the Sussexes’ goal was never simply about reconnecting with King Charles after their latest moves.

The recent reunion between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and King Charles III has sparked fresh debate over whether the Sussexes are attempting to rebuild their connection with the Royal Family — and royal experts are warning Buckingham Palace to proceed with caution.

Rebecca English has warned that Buckingham Palace 'must be alive to the fact' that the Sussexes' recent reunion with the King could be a stepping stone to edge back into royal life

After years of tension following Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal duties, their private meeting with the King at Highgrove was seen by some as a possible sign of improving family relations. However, others believe the encounter could represent something more strategic: a possible pathway for the Sussexes to gradually move closer to royal life once again.

Commenting on Alison Boshoff's recent exclusive, English said the Palace must 'watch its back' if Harry and Meghan have figured out a way to get ready access to the royal family

During the latest episode of Palace Confidential, royal editor Rebecca English warned that the Palace must remain aware of the possibility that Harry and Meghan could use renewed family contact as a way to re-establish a position within the royal circle.

The warning followed reports suggesting that the couple’s recent visit to the UK could become a blueprint for more frequent returns. Harry, Meghan, and their children Archie and Lilibet reportedly travelled from their holiday home in Portugal to meet King Charles at Highgrove on July 10.

According to sources close to the Sussexes, their property in Portugal could potentially serve as a convenient base for future visits to Britain, allowing them easier access to family events and royal connections.

Eden agreed, pointing to a People magazine report in which Meghan expressed sadness with speculation over the trip, speculation that, he said, originated from sources close to the couple

Rebecca English stressed that there was nothing unusual or controversial about a father wanting to see his son or a grandfather spending time with his grandchildren. However, she suggested that some within royal circles are concerned the meeting could eventually lead to a renewed “half-in, half-out” arrangement.

This would mean Harry and Meghan maintaining their independent life away from official royal duties while still keeping a level of involvement, access, and public association with the monarchy.

English explained that the Palace may have entered the meeting with genuine intentions of repairing family relationships, but she questioned whether the same motivations existed on the Sussexes’ side.

She warned that if Harry and Meghan had found a way to regain regular access to the Royal Family without fully returning to royal responsibilities, the Palace would need to be careful about how it handled the situation.

Royal commentator Richard Eden also expressed concerns about the way information surrounding the visit was handled. He pointed to reports claiming Meghan was upset by speculation surrounding the family’s UK trip.

Eden argued that much of the speculation came from sources connected to Harry and Meghan rather than Buckingham Palace. He claimed royal officials were not responsible for the rumours and had refused to provide details about the planned meeting.

According to Eden, Palace staff had been contacted for clarification but remained silent, following King Charles’s wishes that the private conversation at Highgrove should remain confidential.

The lack of official information created a situation where outside reports dominated the public conversation, leading some royal commentators to question how much control Buckingham Palace had over the narrative surrounding Harry and Meghan’s return.

The couple’s latest visit came after years of strained relations with the Royal Family. Since stepping down as senior working royals in 2020, Harry and Meghan have publicly criticised aspects of royal life, including their treatment by the institution.

Their move to the United States and later public interviews created one of the biggest crises faced by the modern monarchy. However, recent developments have suggested that communication between Harry and his father may be slowly improving.

The involvement of Archie and Lilibet has also added emotional importance to the situation, as King Charles has expressed interest in maintaining a relationship with his grandchildren.

Despite this, the possibility of a full reconciliation remains uncertain. While some see the Highgrove meeting as a positive step toward healing family divisions, others remain cautious about what it could mean for the future relationship between the Sussexes and the monarchy.

For Buckingham Palace, the challenge may be finding a balance between supporting family reconciliation and protecting the structure and expectations of royal duties.

As Harry and Meghan continue to maintain links with Britain while building their independent life overseas, every interaction with the Royal Family is likely to attract intense scrutiny.

The Highgrove reunion may have lasted only a short time, but its impact on the ongoing royal drama could continue for much longer.
