HARRY AND MEGHAN MAY NOT HAVE SIMPLY WOKEN UP ONE MORNING AND DECIDED TO MOVE BACK TO BRITAIN — SOMEONE SAW THIS COMING A YEAR AGO. Last September, Harry was already telling friends that he wanted Archie and Lilibet to be educated in Britain, while one source even revealed that Charles “is delighted.” At the time, it sounded like a plan for the distant future, particularly as Meghan was said to be less than enthusiastic about boarding-school culture. Now the two children have reportedly been enrolled in British schools, and the entire family is preparing to return within days. But Richard Eden says those seemingly disconnected clues were part of something bigger — a plan with a name he only learned later — and bringing the Sussexes back to Britain may have been just the first step.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain may look sudden, but some of the clues were apparently hiding in plain sight.

The most important was not a palace meeting or a public statement. It was Harry’s interest in where his children would go to school.

Harry and Meghan's Break With Britain and Planned Return: a Timeline - The New York Times

According to Richard Eden’s commentary in the Daily Mail, Harry was already discussing educating Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet in Britain when he visited the UK last September. Eden argues that this forms part of a much larger story — one he says began before the Sussexes’ return became public.

A friend of Harry told him at the time:

“Harry wants to educate the children here in the UK.”

Harry reportedly felt Archie and Lilibet were missing the “extensive family network” enjoyed by William and Catherine’s children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Education mattered too. Harry has maintained friendships dating back to Ludgrove and Eton and reportedly wanted his children to have something similar.

“Harry wants his children to have the very best education.”

At the time, Eden assumed this was a long-term ambition. Archie and Lilibet were young, and Meghan was reportedly not enthusiastic about boarding-school culture. She was said to consider sending children away to school “barbaric”.

Harry’s friend even acknowledged:

“There is still some negotiation for Harry to have with Meghan. The King, however, is delighted.”

That final sentence looks more significant now.

What Looked Like a Future Plan Was Already Moving

Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, have now reportedly been enrolled at schools in Britain and are due to start next month.

Neither the schools nor the location of the Sussexes’ new home has been disclosed, although sources close to them say they will not live in a royal residence.

That makes Harry’s conversation last September look less like idle speculation and more like an early indication of what was coming.

It also suggests Charles may have known about Harry’s desire to educate his children in Britain well before the current move.

For the King, there is an obvious personal benefit.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Kids: Everything To Know

Charles reportedly welcomes the Sussexes’ return because it will allow him to spend more time privately with his son and grandchildren. When Charles and Queen Camilla hosted Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet at Highgrove last month, it was the King’s first meeting with his California-based grandchildren in more than four years and only his second meeting with Lilibet.

William and Catherine, significantly, did not see them.

The Family Problem Has Not Disappeared

Harry’s return therefore brings him geographically closer to a family that remains emotionally divided.

William and Harry are still estranged following years of conflict and the publication of Spare. Eden is particularly scathing about Harry’s treatment of William and Catherine, accusing him of having “betrayed William and Catherine in the most egregious way.”

That is Eden’s judgment, rather than an official Palace position, but the lack of a reunion between the two couples last month demonstrates that Harry returning to Britain does not automatically mean the old relationships have been repaired.

And that distinction becomes crucial to Eden’s wider argument.

The Old “Half-In, Half-Out” Problem Returns in a New Form

Queen Elizabeth II rejected Harry and Meghan’s original attempt to combine royal public service with financial independence.

The concern, as Eden describes it, was trust.

If members of the Royal Family could perform public engagements while simultaneously developing private commercial interests, how could the public know where duty ended and business began?

Harry and Meghan will not return as working royals.

But Eden believes another grey area could emerge.

They could continue undertaking charitable engagements while also maintaining money-making ventures. To Eden, that combination is “highly dangerous” because their proximity to the monarchy may increase the commercial value of the Sussex name even without restoring their official roles.

This is the real constitutional and reputational tension behind his argument.

The Sussexes do not necessarily need to rejoin the monarchy to become more closely associated with it again.

They simply need to be nearby.

Why the Timing Matters

Eden also points to Charles’s health.

The King continues to receive cancer treatment, and Eden argues that returning now gives Harry and Meghan an opportunity to strengthen their royal connections before William eventually becomes king.

There is no evidence presented that Harry and Meghan themselves have described this as their motivation. It remains Eden’s interpretation.

He goes further, predicting that after failing, in his view, to establish a rival “royal court” in America, the Sussexes could attempt something similar in Britain, potentially competing for attention with William and Catherine.

Again, this is speculation rather than a confirmed Sussex strategy.

But it leads directly to the most intriguing claim in Eden’s article.

“Project Thaw”

A year ago, Eden claimed there was an Establishment “plot”, supported by some senior politicians and courtiers, to facilitate Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain.

He says he was mocked for it.

Buckingham Palace officials reportedly dismissed the idea, while supporters of the Sussexes in America rejected the suggestion that Meghan would even want to leave her homeland.

Now the couple are coming back.

And Eden says his sources subsequently gave the alleged effort a name:

“Project Thaw.”

The supposed objective was straightforward: thaw the Sussexes’ frozen relationship with both the Royal Family and the British public.

If Eden’s account is correct, one half of that task has clearly progressed. Harry and Meghan are returning. Their children will attend British schools. Charles will have considerably more access to his grandchildren.

But Eden argues the second half has not succeeded.

The couple have yet to regain the affection of the British public.

His prescription is uncompromising: publicly ask William and Catherine for forgiveness and abandon commercial money-making in favour of public service.

Whether Sussexes would ever contemplate such a move is another matter.

What makes this story compelling is therefore not merely that Harry is returning to the country he left six years ago.

It is the possibility that the return itself is only one stage of something that has been developing quietly for much longer.

If Eden’s sources are correct, “Project Thaw” has already achieved the part many once thought impossible. The unanswered question is what its architects believe should happen next.

CHARLES MAY BE WELCOMING HIS SON BACK — BUT THE REAL BILL COULD ULTIMATELY LAND ON WILLIAM’S DESK. Harry and Meghan are not returning as working royals, so on paper, the Palace does not need to change anything. THERE’S ONE PROBLEM WITH THE STORY THAT HARRY AND MEGHAN SUDDENLY DECIDED TO RETURN TO BRITAIN: THEIR FOOTPRINTS WERE ALREADY THERE LAST YEAR. The Sussexes are now believed to be preparing to settle in the Cotswolds, with Archie and Lilibet potentially attending a local prep school. Their secret July visit appears to have given them an opportunity to scout the area before making a final decision. But it was only when a local property source revealed that the couple had apparently been quietly making inquiries about exactly this that the pieces began to fall into place. IF YOU THINK HARRY IS DRAGGING A RELUCTANT MEGHAN BACK TO BRITAIN, FRIENDS OF THE SUSSEXES ARE TELLING A VERY DIFFERENT STORY. Harry has never stopped feeling British, so his desire to bring Archie and Lilibet back to his homeland is hardly difficult to understand. The real surprise is Meghan, with sources insisting that she has not simply agreed to the move but is “fully behind it.” She is preparing to swap the California sunshine for a life in a country where she once spoke openly about loneliness, privacy concerns and the restrictions of royal existence. A trade-off this big is unlikely to be simply about Harry missing home — and what Meghan stands to gain from the move may be the most revealing part of the entire story.

William may not have been Harry’s real target, but the damage reached somewhere far more personal — and that may be the reason the door to reconciliation remains firmly shut.
