“BIG BURN” TURNES EPISODE 4 INTO A NIGHTMARE! ONLY 6 TEAMS REMAIN, BUT THE UNBELIEVABLE CHALLENGE EVEN EXPERIENCED PITMASTERS ARE STIRRING! Only 6 teams remain for episode 4 of “Rooter to Tooter & Head-to-Head,” but the competition has already become fierce with the “Big Burn” challenge – where pitmasters are forced to process an entire animal, instead of cooking individual portions as usual. Not only do they have to create two main courses and two side dishes from all the ingredients, but the teams also face a nearly impossible additional requirement, increasing the pressure exponentially in the middle of the race. These harsh conditions pushed the pitmasters to their limits, turning the kitchen into a veritable battlefield filled with mistakes, tension, and life-or-death decisions. Many viewers called this the most challenging episode of the season, where skill, speed, and composure were all put to the test in a single round.

With only six teams remaining, Pitmasters reaches a major turning point in Episode 4, pushing competitors far beyond simply smoking great barbecue. This time, every team must break down an entire animal before transforming it into a complete live-fire feast. But the biggest surprise comes when the judges suddenly introduce an extra requirement—each team must also make fresh sausages from scratch during the competition, adding another layer of pressure to an already brutal challenge. Between butcharing, sausage-making, cooking multiple dishes, and racing against the clock, one mistake could send even the strongest pitmaster home.

Episode 4, titled “Rooter to Tooter & Head-to-Head,” marks one of the most demanding challenges of the season so far.

Judges Andrew Zimmern, Moe Cason, Ernest Servantes, and Jess Pryles unveil an all-new Big Burn challenge designed to test every aspect of a pitmaster’s skill.

Instead of receiving individual cuts of meat as in previous episodes, each team is handed an entire animal.

The choices include:

  • Whole hog
  • Whole goat
  • Whole lamb

From that single animal, every team must create:

  • Two main dishes
  • Two side dishes

Every element of the meal must be cooked exclusively over live fire, leaving no room for shortcuts.

Unlike previous rounds, this challenge isn’t simply about producing flavorful barbecue.

Contestants must first demonstrate whole-animal butchery, carefully breaking down the animal before deciding how to maximize every cut.

Teams must determine which muscles are best suited for each dish, minimize waste by utilizing as much of the animal as possible, carefully manage cooking times since every cut cooks differently, and still deliver an entire multi-course menu before time expires.

As if that weren’t difficult enough, the judges introduce an unexpected twist.

In the middle of the competition, every team is required to produce fresh homemade sausages, forcing competitors to grind meat, season it correctly, stuff the casings, and cook the sausages successfully while continuing work on the rest of their menu.

The additional sausage challenge dramatically increases the complexity of the cook, demanding precision, organization, and flawless time management under intense pressure.

Although whole-animal cooking is a familiar skill among elite pitmasters, it is rarely showcased in this level of detail on television, making Episode 4 one of the competition’s most technically demanding installments.

The episode’s title also hints at another major development.

Following the Big Burn, the remaining teams enter a Head-to-Head showdown.

While Food Network’s official preview confirms the existence of this direct elimination-style battle, the network has not yet revealed the complete format or exactly how the matchups will determine the week’s advantage—or which team ultimately faces elimination.

With the field shrinking to just six teams, every decision now carries enormous consequences, and Episode 4 promises to separate good barbecue cooks from true championship-caliber pitmasters.
