One of the season’s biggest favorites has officially fallen.

After the social media-inspired Mystery Box challenge judged alongside Nick DiGiovanni, the three weakest dishes belonged to Foo Nguyen, Peter Egede, and Maria Bourland. When the judges revealed the final decision, it was Maria Bourland who was sent home—one of the most surprising eliminations of the competition so far.

Maria entered the episode as one of the strongest contenders in the field. Earlier in the season, she had captured an Immunity Pin, earned the responsibility of dividing the teams during the Royal Wedding challenge, and consistently finished near the top of the leaderboard. Many viewers considered her a legitimate contender for the finale.

For the elimination challenge, Maria chose to showcase her Brazilian roots with a Baby Octopus Rice dish.

They also felt the dish struggled to strike the right balance between authentic traditional cuisine and the eye-catching presentation expected for a social media sensation.
