Man Dies and Woman Critically Injured After Crash Following Police Pursuit in Warwickshire

A man has died and a woman remains critically ill in hospital after a collision that followed a police pursuit in Warwickshire.
The incident happened on Monday evening after officers attempted to stop a black Audi in Stratford-upon-Avon. Police said the vehicle failed to stop and continued away from officers, setting off a chain of events that ended in a serious crash involving another car.
Warwickshire Police said officers initially tried to stop the Audi on Birmingham Road at approximately 5.23pm. Instead of pulling over, the vehicle travelled away from the area in the direction of the A46.
The Audi later returned towards Stratford along the A439 Warwick Road.
Collision Involving a Ford Puma
At around 5.44pm, the Audi was involved in a collision with a white Ford Puma.
The driver of the Audi, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford Puma, a woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital. She remains in a critical condition.
Police said the families of both people involved have been informed and are receiving specialist support following the devastating incident.
A number of other vehicles were also damaged during the sequence of events.
The crash resulted in major disruption in the area, with roads closed while emergency services and investigators worked at the scene.
Police Referral Made After Fatal Crash

Because the fatal collision occurred following police contact, Warwickshire Police said it had made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct, known as the IOPC.
The referral means the circumstances surrounding the police interaction and subsequent crash will be independently examined.
Superintendent Steve Flavell said officers’ thoughts were with everyone affected, particularly the families facing the loss and uncertainty caused by the collision. Specialist support was being provided to those involved.
The independent investigation is expected to consider the circumstances of the attempted stop, the subsequent pursuit and the events that occurred before the Audi collided with the Ford Puma.
Investigation Into What Happened
Police are now working to establish the precise sequence of events between the initial attempt to stop the Audi and the fatal collision.
The Audi was first approached by officers on Birmingham Road shortly after 5.20pm. Police say the driver failed to stop and travelled towards the A46 before subsequently heading back towards Stratford on the A439.
Less than half an hour after the original attempted stop, the Audi crashed into the Ford Puma.
The male driver died at the scene, while the woman driving the second vehicle was left fighting for her life in hospital.
Investigators are also looking into damage caused to several other vehicles during the incident.
Community Left Shocked
The collision has left the local community shocked, particularly because of the short period between the attempted police stop and the fatal crash.
The incident has also renewed attention on the dangers that can arise when a vehicle fails to stop for police and a pursuit follows.
However, with the IOPC now involved, the full circumstances surrounding the police contact and the collision will be subject to further examination.
For the families involved, the immediate priority remains supporting the woman who is critically injured while mourning the man who lost his life.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities establish exactly what happened during the pursuit and in the moments leading up to the crash.
