Some were so alarmed by the plan that they even called on police to intervene.

The mother of 23-year-old Michael Cahill (pictured) has urged friends and family to bring off-road vehicles to a public field to 'give him the send off he deserves'

The mother of one of the five young men killed in the horrific A66 crash has called on friends and relatives to honour her son with a large gathering involving motorcycles, cars, jeeps and quad bikes.

Kelly Cahill, the mother of 23-year-old Michael Cahill, announced plans for a tribute in Peterlee, County Durham, several days after her son died alongside four friends in the devastating collision that also claimed the lives of two Cleveland Police officers.

Cahill was killed at around 3.39am on Saturday, August 22, when the Volkswagen Passat carrying the five young men travelled onto the wrong side of the A66 and collided with a marked police vehicle. The police car was carrying PCs Tom Clough and Matthew Blades, who both died in the crash. All five occupants of the Passat were also killed.

Mother Calls for Vehicles to Join the Tribute

The memorial on Monday began as a balloon release but descended into noise and confusion

In the aftermath of her son’s death, Kelly Cahill initially posted a personal message mourning Michael and saying goodbye to him.

She later announced a change to the arrangements for his memorial.

Instead of a simple gathering, she encouraged Michael’s friends and members of the local community to attend a public field in Peterlee with their vehicles. Her appeal specifically mentioned bikes, jeeps, cars and quad bikes as part of the planned tribute.

The proposed gathering was expected to take place on Thursday at a piece of council-owned land opposite the White House hotel and wedding venue.

The idea quickly attracted concern from some local residents, who questioned whether the field was appropriate or safe for a large number of off-road vehicles.

Locals Fear Dangerous Gathering

Residents familiar with the site said access to the field involves a locked gate and a barrier, raising questions about how a large group of vehicles could enter the area.

One local resident expressed concern that dozens of motorcycles and quad bikes could create a dangerous situation, particularly because the field is close to a major road.

The resident acknowledged the family’s desire to remember Michael but questioned whether bringing large numbers of vehicles onto the site was the safest way to conduct the memorial.

There were also concerns about what could happen if people began riding the vehicles around the field during the gathering.

The White House hotel reportedly said it had not been contacted about the proposed event and declined to comment further.

Tribute Comes After Controversial Vigil

The proposed Peterlee gathering follows an earlier memorial for another of the young men killed in the A66 crash.

On Monday, friends and relatives of 23-year-old Jakub Matusiak gathered in a field in South Bank, Middlesbrough, close to the location of the fatal collision.

What began as a balloon release reportedly became a much louder gathering as attendees set off flares and rockets. Motorcycles and quad bikes were also involved, with a group of masked youths riding across the field while engines were revved and horns were sounded.

Images and videos from the gathering generated criticism online, particularly because the scenes were dramatically different from a nearby silent prayer vigil held in memory of PCs Tom Clough and Matthew Blades.

The officers were killed when the Passat crossed onto the wrong carriageway and struck their marked police vehicle.

Environmental Objections to Balloon Releases

Balloon releases planned as part of tributes to the young men have also attracted opposition.

An environmental campaign group, Stop Balloon Releases North East, warned that balloons released into the air can eventually fall onto the ground, creating litter and potentially endangering animals.

The group encouraged members of the public to raise objections with Middlesbrough Council over proposed balloon releases connected with the other victims.

The controversy has therefore extended beyond the question of public safety to include concerns about environmental damage.

Michael Cahill Remembered by Friends

Michael Cahill, 23, was one of five occupants of the Volkswagen Passat who died in the A66 collision.

Friends have continued to post tributes to him online following his death.

One video that circulated as a tribute reportedly showed Cahill travelling at high speed in a Seat alongside a friend. The footage, shared by Mason Doherty, appeared to show the vehicle accelerating through a residential area while music played.

The video has attracted attention because of the wider investigation into dangerous driving and the events that preceded the fatal A66 crash.

However, the existence of footage showing previous driving behaviour does not by itself establish what happened during the final journey.

Other Victims Also Remembered

Michael Cahill was killed alongside Jakub Matusiak, Makai Saddington, Theo Rae and Cole Robert Worthy.

The youngest of the group was 17-year-old Cole Worthy.

A separate tribute was planned for Worthy at Trimdon pitch in Acklam, Middlesbrough, with friends describing it as an opportunity to celebrate his life.

Worthy’s family has been described as devastated by his death.

A family member appealed for people to give his mother, Natalie, privacy while she dealt with the loss of her son.

Matusiak’s Family Pays Tribute

Jakub Matusiak’s relatives and friends have also shared emotional messages following his death.

His sister described him as her best friend, while family friend Jodie Stephenson wrote about the important role he had played in her family’s life.

She recalled his presence around her children and described him as someone they trusted and loved.

The tributes have offered a more personal picture of the young men behind the headlines, even as the circumstances surrounding their deaths continue to generate controversy.

Police Officers Remembered at Separate Vigil

The public response to the deaths of the five young men has been sharply contrasted with the tributes paid to the two police officers.

PC Tom Clough and PC Matthew Blades were killed while responding to events in the area.

Clough, 38, was a former soldier, while Blades, 37, was a father of two and had also worked as a teacher and youth football coach.

A fundraising appeal launched by the Cleveland Police Federation for their families rapidly exceeded its initial Β£400,000 target and was subsequently increased to Β£700,000.

A quiet prayer vigil was also held at a nearby church, providing a starkly different atmosphere from the loud roadside and field gatherings associated with some of the tributes for the five young men.

Questions Continue Over the Fatal Crash

The A66 collision remains the subject of a major investigation.

Police have been examining the events leading up to the crash, including the movements of the Volkswagen Passat and a separate Volvo allegedly linked to an earlier incident.

According to reports, the Passat had been involved in a police pursuit that was brought to an end shortly before it entered the A66 travelling in the wrong direction. The fatal collision occurred approximately ten seconds after the pursuit was stopped.

The police vehicle carrying PCs Clough and Blades was not itself part of that pursuit but had been sent to the area to assist officers.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct is examining the circumstances surrounding the police response, while Cleveland Police continues its investigation into the wider events.

A Family Grieving Amid Growing Controversy

For Kelly Cahill, the proposed Peterlee gathering is intended as a final tribute to her son.

Her request for friends to arrive with motorcycles, cars, jeeps and quad bikes has nevertheless raised concerns in the local community, particularly because of the location and the possibility of a large number of vehicles gathering together.

The debate comes at an especially sensitive moment. Seven people lost their lives in the A66 tragedy, including five young men in the Passat and two police officers in the marked patrol vehicle.

While investigations continue into the events that led to the collision, families and friends on both sides are attempting to deal with an extraordinary level of grief.

The planned tribute for Michael Cahill now sits at the centre of that difficult conversation: a mother’s desire to give her son what she believes is a fitting farewell, alongside concerns about safety, public space and the wider impact of the memorial.

Sitting forlornly on an oak table, three lonely tins of Meghan Markle’s $15 flower sprinkles are all that remain of what was once a lavishly promoted outpost…

OH, MEGHAN β€” SHE STILL DOESN’T SEEM TO KNOW WHO SHE IS WITHOUT HARRY. After years in the United States trying to build fame and success in Hollywood, everything people still recognize Meghan for seems to come back to one identity: Prince Harry’s wife, the Duchess of Sussex. Both Meghan and Catherine started out with the same position β€” women who married into the British Royal Family. But the difference is clear: while Catherine’s public image and popularity have grown to the point where she often stands beyond her husband William’s shadow, Meghan still appears to remain defined by her connection to Harry. Experts have suggested that Meghan has worked extremely hard to change that perception and create an identity of her own. But one critical mistake in the way she approached that reinvention may have caused all of those efforts to become meaningless.

For years, Meghan Markle has tried to build a new identity beyond acting. Since stepping away from royal duties with Prince Harry in 2020, she has explored…
